Today I found out that Umberto Eco crafted a version of this meme in the 1980s…
Beware the
alibi of photocopies ! Photocopies are indis-
pensable instruments. They allow you to keep with you a text you have already read in the library, and to take home a text you have not read yet. But a set of photocopies can become an alibi. A student makes hundreds of pages of photocopies and takes them home, and the manual labor he exercises in doing so gives him the impression that he possesses the work. Owning the photocopies exempts the student from actually reading them. This sort of vertigo of accumulation, a neocapitalism of information, happens to many. Defend yourself from this trap: as soon as you have the photocopy, read it and annotate it immediately. If you are not in a great hurry, do not photocopy something new before you own (that is, before you have read and annotated) the previous set of photocopies. There are many things that I do not know because I photocopied a text and then relaxed as if I had read it.

Did you ever read the old DUNGEONEER/BLACKSAND books for Advanced Fighting Fantasy? They were the first game I recall that explicitly used the language of cinema, encouraging the GM to describe the camera panning over the heroes. It even referred to handouts and such as 'props'.

There's scarcely been a day's writing when I've not had cause to recall my favourite ever quote from an author about their own work, from a Paris Review interview with John Banville in 2009.
John Banville, speaking to Belina McKeon for The Paris Review in 2009:

INTERVIEWER

Do you really hate your own novels?

BANVILLE

Yes! I hate them. I mean that. Nobody believes me, but it’s true. They’re an embarrassment and a deep source of shame. They’re better than everybody else’s, of course, but not good enough for me. There is a great deal more pain than pleasure in writing fiction. It’s only now and then, maybe once every three or four days, that I manage to write a sentence in which I hear that wonderful harmonic chime that you get when, say, you flick the edge of a wine glass with a fingernail. That’s what keeps me going. When I read the proofs of a new novel—which is the last time I will read or even glance at it—I approach it with one eye closed, so to speak, thinking, God, what am I going to find here? And I find horrors, horrors that can’t be fixed. Everything in the text now seems hopelessly flat and deadened. Where I imagined a dancing rhythm, I find clumping and stumbling.

My favourite fantasy trilogy since The First Law. What happens when the heroes defeat the dark lord? And just what do you do with a sentient demon sword when there's no necromancers left to slay? And what the fuck do immortal elves get up to when they're not singing songs tralala in the valley?

Nothing inspires an author's desire to reminiscence like reading a royalty statement and seeing how close a book is to earning out. In unrelated news, I was thinking about my LANDS OF THE FIRSTBORN trilogy - what becomes of heroes after the quest is done? www.hachettebookgroup.com/series/garet...

Here, have a photo that says "I was much more focussed on working out where the camera is on this iPad than those things you call facial expressions."
The author, unshaven and slightly red-faced, reacts to Grant's birthday as if relative youth was a minor personal affront - not a big enough offence to warrant comment, certainly, more something to be nursed as a grudge.

Rereading SLAYING THE DRAGON and giggling at the novel bits
The pair bickered over it a bit more until Kirchoff relented. “Since it’s a sidekick character, I’ll let you get away with it. What’s his name?” Recalling the moment decades later, Salvatore said, “Off the top of my head, I have no idea how or why, or whatever, I said, ‘Drizzt Do’Urden of Menzoberranzan.’” She said, “Can you spell that?” “Not a chance,” he replied
