The paired, leg-like appendages hanging out from this ant’s mouth don’t belong to some weird parasite. Instead, these are the maxillary (six segments) and labial (four) palps. Ant palps contain touch and taste sensors, and they are used to assess and manipulate food. Formica incerta. Woodstock, NY.

White guy furry artists drawing "tribal" art or making "tribal" stories, will never not be weird. First of all most of the time it's exploitative & second how would you know what that kind of life/society is even like? Yes I had a specific artist in mind in this post. No I won't publicly say who.

What was this, the second time in a month that leftists gleefully joined in on a harassment campaign initiated by reactionaries against covid cautious people? Seems like that indicates a critical absence in awareness and analysis. Maybe y’all should fix that. And your hearts too.

it's not hyperbolic to say that if the ways you talk and think about disabled/sick people (as well as the COVID precautions we may take) are indistinguishable from how fascists talk about disabled/sick people—even down to the same statements—then you have a fucking problem.

Night eyes 😎 Finally got proper pictures of this amazing phenomenon! Mantises change their eye color (and light sensitivity) at night by transporting pigments from the surface of each compound eye unit toward the deeper eye region. Same female Tenodera sinensis, two different times. #bugsky

The African driver ants are among the most charismatic and (in)famous social insects. Unfortunately, their taxonomy is a bit of a mess. In this new OA paper, we begin to rectify this, focusing on the West African species. Spearheaded by Caspar Schöning and Raphael Weniger. doi.org/10.3897/zook...

complex. symmetrical. undeniably stylish male gonopods, belonging to the crested millipedes in the genus Abacion
a pair of gonopods, they’re difficult to describe with words. the base of each is thick, boxlike, and three branches sprout from them, arising from the inner surface of the boxes: the lowest and thinnest are simple thin spikes directed at angles outwards; behind them a taller, thicker column, crowned with a pincerlike arrangement of twisted spines splaying out to the side, the largest curved, broad, and spoonlike; and a third, stout spine stands up from about the middle of the boxlike structure. the side of the box facing the camera has a soft membrane with a sparse tuft of long bristles a similar structure but the third spikes are thinner and straighter, and the complicated crowns of the second bit differs a little in the angles of the pieces

This was a weird one... I don't have a good ID for them and I have no idea what they were doing on this hanging dead stick. They seemed peaceful, and only got agitated when I got near with my camera... I wonder what they were up to? 🪲ID Guess: Sweat bees? #bugsky #ozinverts #inverts
A photo of multiple little black bees with small bodies, orange legs, and thin white stripes on their abdomens gathered closely together on a dead stick. The dead stick is suspended by old spider threads.A closeup photo focusing on one of the bees. It has a thinner body than the common bee, its chitin is entirely black covered in sparse white hairs, and its legs are orange. Its abdomen has white markings on the bottom, and its wings are neatly folded over its body.

Belonuchus cephalotes lurks at the surface of a Heliconia phytotelma, just waiting for ONE plump, tasty mosquito larva/pupa to get within yoinking rangeare-you-kidding-me action shot of a successful Belonuchus cephalotes, skittering away with its succulent pupal meal (a Wyeomyia nearly the size of the beetle)

This is Psalidomyrmex. It hunts earthworms. Which is a habit that probably merits weird mandibles. But I just learned they don't need to have slicing mandibles, just grabby ones, because earthworms drop their tails when attacked, so the ants just haul them off like they were harvesting fruit.
