Are we in space? Are we in water? Are we peering through a window of time, to the late Triassic, watching a plesiosaur eat the sun? ~Yes~ (posca markers on scrap wood)

with everything coming out of megaplex this year, this feels worth sharing. end overdose has a free online course about how to respond to suspected overdoses. it only takes ~20 minutes and you get a free naloxone kit mailed to you at the end. (it also features a very cute cat)
Graphic with text promoting Overdose Awareness Month in August, featuring a cartoon cat and naloxone nasal spray, with a call to support ending overdose. website link is endoverdose.net or @end.overdose on instagram

'You'll choke too' - an aerial embroidery landscape inspired by all the wildfires happening right now... I'm upset every time I smell smoke outside and somehow we have people starting them maliciously too! But we all breathe the same air so they'll choke too (1/2 - see thread for close-ups)
An embroidery hoop containing a sewn landscape from above. It shows a forest on the right, a line of fire and charred ground with smoke on the left. The smoke is felted wool.

a plant is on the lineup at lolla this year! this device, called PlantWave, reads biosignals moving through the leaves in real time. the fluctuations in electrical signaling and conductivity changes become the notes through mapping. the result is a continuous, evolving sound.
A fiddle leaf fig plant at Lollapalooza with two white biosensor electrodes attached to its leaves, connected by white cables. Behind the plant, a black sign with a red border reads "This plant is making music. Tune into nature's secret song with PlantWave by Data Garden." The Re:wild logo appears at the top of the sign. Colorful streamers hang from trees in the festival background.

PM2.5 is the stuff that's been linked to malignancies and respiratory conditions in Gulf War/GWOR veterans that served in SWA. Limiting your exposure is important especially if you're in an area with a very large concentration from the fires.

Wildfire smoke from Canada is carrying fine particulate matter (PM2.5) aka particles small enough to reach deep into your lungs and bloodstream. Stay indoors if you can, but if you HAVE to go out - if available, skip cloth/surgical masks and use a fitted N95/KN95. Limit time.

For 50+ years, "harm" under the Endangered Species Act meant two things: killing an animal, or destroying the place it lives. The bald eagle, the California condor, the American alligator - all recovered because both counted. As of last Friday, only one still does.

Over 800 wildfires are burning across Canada right now. Canada also holds more than a quarter of the world's boreal forest and is warming at twice the global average rate. The smoke is the part getting attention. Here is everything else. 🧵

As nature collapses, the people who live closest to it are disrupted first. Meanwhile, the city people in air-conditioned rooms and offices who inhabit airports, malls and motorways - they hardly notice. "First Nations make up 5% of Canada's population and roughly 42% of its wildfire evacuees."

Today SCOTUS ruled 7-2 you can't sue Bayer for not warning you Roundup might cause cancer. This ruling hinges on an EPA decision that was partly based on a safety paper ghostwritten by Monsanto employees and later retracted for "serious ethical concerns." We are so cooked.

Only 1,600 Hawaiian monk seals are left in the world. 1,200 of them live in Papahānaumokuākea. The argument for reopening commercial fishing there is economic pressure. The argument against is extinction. These are not equivalent concerns.

A federal appeals court ruled last week that blocking trans adults from healthcare is constitutional because states have a legitimate interest in "encouraging citizens to appreciate their sex." I'm exhausted and furious and you should know this is happening.
Screenshot of a highlighted passage from a US federal court ruling. The highlighted section reads: "It is not irrational for a legislature to forgo Medicaid coverage of arguably ineffective and dangerous procedures and allocate its limited resources to covering other treatments. What's more, States may legitimately recognize and 'celebrat[e]' the 'inherent differences between men and women.' Virginia, 518 U.S. at 533 (internal quotation marks omitted). And it is not irrational for a legislature to encourage citizens 'to appreciate their sex' and not 'become disdainful of their sex' by refusing to fund experimental procedures that may have the opposite effect. Skrmetti, 605 U.S. at 516–17." The unhighlighted text below reads: "The Supreme Court's decision in Skrmetti forecloses any argument to the contrary. By holding that SB1 passed rational basis review, the Supreme Court made clear that prohibitions on sex-change treatments are not inherently irrational. And West Virginia provided legitimate reasons that rationally related to its policy. Therefore, we find West Virginia's Exclusion easily passes rational basis review."

the mantis shrimp has 16 types of color receptors. humans have 3. we see roughly 10 million colors and think that's impressive. the mantis shrimp is sitting there processing a visual reality so hyperchromatic that scientists genuinely aren't sure what it's like to be one. #addOcean

Conservation in 2026: explaining that the lion in Djibouti was rendered, not rediscovered.
Screenshot from a news article. It reads: When Houssein Rayaleh received a WhatsApp message from a local ecotourism guide showing footage of a lioness in Djibouti, he was excited. The video showed the big cat running directly in front of a moving vehicle along Route Nationale 11, a road that Rayaleh knows well.

This was shocking. Lions are officially extinct here: There are no records of Panthera leo in this Horn of Africa country.

“I said whoa, we have a lion in Djibouti,” says Rayaleh, the CEO and founder of the NGO Djibouti Nature.

So he forwarded the video on to the Cat Specialist Group at the IUCN, the global wildlife conservation authority.

“As it happened, it was a fake,” Rayaleh says.

Certain details spring out in the video identifying it as an AI-generated video, says Urs Breitenmoser, co-chair of the group. “The lion behaves very strangely and there are also a few sequences where you can actually see that it is morphologically not quite correct.”
