also: a reminder that restorative justice is definitionally within the control of the person who has been harmed and not ANYONE ELSE. it cannot be a route chosen for them, and they have full control over the process. otherwise it’s just sparkling mediation

To explicitly or implicitly reify the kinship between harm and madness is to rely upon the erasure of sanist violence and harm enacted against Mad people. The claim that Mad people are uniquely prone to harm depends on ignoring the multitude of violences inflicted on them by sane power.

ERUPTING EARTH / EXPLODING SKY 🌈 a gouache piece from residency, 2023

an illustration painted in gouache, playing with vibrant colours. tall towers of clouds across the lower half, a dark blue sky giving way to light from the top to the bottom. bisecting the image is a warped and liquid rainbow. in the centre is a strange shooting star with multiple tails, rocketing over a flat black square. the bust of one figure is in the upper left, looking down and away, and he's coloured in a wash of blue. in the lower right is another figure reaching up toward him or the star, longing and young, their dark black-purple hair sweeping and swirling around them.
these characters are from the comic SUPERPOSE.

my story THE THAW is now out there for anyone. 5USD / 114pg / 🔞 superpose.itch.io/the-thaw

the cover i illustrated for my story, THE THAW. the story chronicles key moments— as defined by death, abuse, and sex— in the life of field medic Enver Kaychak.

this is a line drawing of a crow, mouth open in a silent shriek, frantically and fearsomely copulating with the dead body of another crow, a phenomenon which occurs in nature and here serves as a description of the potent intrusive thoughts and fantasies of the main character.

I'm under no illusions about how things are or what the trajectory is. But I'm also excited for the future because that is where I will hang out with the people I care about and do the things I like doing, or haven't done before. Weird but telling that this holds less appeal for much richer people.

Friendly reminder that Duolingo was initially concieved to trick people into translating articles for free, which they later used as training data for MTL algorithms. Duolingo's primary purpose has NEVER been about teaching you a language, even from the start! slate.com/technology/2...

If it doesn’t charge users and, so far, doesn’t serve them any ads, how does Duolingo make money? It tricks you into working as an unpaid translation service. At the end of some lessons, Duolingo will ask you if you want to practice by translating a real-world document. Which will turn out to be, say, a BuzzFeed article. By melding together enough stabs at this task from high-level Duolingo users, the app can render a surprisingly accurate translation. Which is worth good money. So far, Duolingo has contracts with BuzzFeed and CNN to translate stories from English into languages such as Spanish, French, and Portuguese. This service is already earning Duolingo hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, but von Ahn predicts he will be adding a raft of new clients soon. “The language translations market is huge,” he says. “It’s a $30 billion per year market.”

SUPERPOSE is written and illustrated equally by anka & i. it's ignatz-nominated and can be read at home or on tapas ▮ superposecomic.com ▮ tapas.io/series/SUPER... we're supported by patreon.com/SUPERPOSE

synopsis for SUPERPOSE: An ongoing queer sci-fi horror comic about physics.

On the Atlantic coast,
in a town called PORT CITY—

“a place out of time”

While a tourist destination boasting a popular beach and boardwalk, Port City is also home to ROMAN LABS, an aerospace-turned-tech company now floundering in the tech boom.
Rafael and Royal are each listless in their own lives as longtime locals with little mobility, whose orbits have only occasionally overlapped, until now. Turning a job at the lab into a last-ditch effort for a glimpse of a more equitable future brings Royal and Rafael together, and beaches Kas, a young physicist, on Port City’s shores.
Together they seize the opportunity to alter their future and carve out a place in time for themselves, finally shaking the town and their lives from standstill.

Changing history begins with the machine.

None of us can do this alone. If you do care about resisting genocide and helping Palestinians, please don't just watch the people helping and think that they've got it. We don't. This needs collective action. Please quote, share, donate, talk to Palestinians yourself if you can, add to the effort.
