And rare the final product to 1/5 of the pressure test load That caused failure.

in this scenario, we probably would after someone drove a robotic test load across the bridge. People forgot that a lot of engineering design (and is still in some ASME codes) was design by proof testing as opposed to design by code rule or analytical Methods. Basically pressurize it to failure

A better example would be an LLM designs a bridge. The trusses are 30% lighter and cheaper than a conventional bridge but too complex to verify by structural engineers using their standard methods. Do you trust the LLM enough to drive across the bridge?

Matt Hiatt @mthiatt.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Or better example, LLM designs new bridge design that is 30% cheaper to build and 10% stronger with truss designs that are too complex for humans to verify analytically. Do we build the bridge?

It could have been an interesting thought experiment but you would need to do something like “new epidemic has broken out, LLM says never before used cocktail mix will fight it, do we trust that enough to do human trials?” Or something else where safety (phase 3 trials) isn’t already proven

In practice, yall are describing items that require an advanced industrial supply chain to still exist in a war zone. Just burning something is much easier. Heck Syria managed to refine oil throughout its civil war using something that looks out of the Stone Age. syriadirect.org/how-syrias-m...

How Syria’s makeshift refineries poison people—and the land that sustains them (Photos)
Makeshift oil refineries endanger the health of workers and local communities in northwestern Syria. But their environmental impact, often overlooked, will also affect generations to come.

People also forget that the major advantage fossil fuels have is that you can extract energy from them in extremely low tech ways. even if you destroy the refinery, you can burn crude for heating. PV without a transformer provides exactly zero heating value.

Matt Hiatt @mthiatt.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
I think you’re overselling that. Grid scale renewables are also attackable but you do it differently. Take out the step up transformers and you’re down a year or more. And the explosion of a large HV transformer makes for almost as nice a YT video

We go through other languages' pockets and steal words, then traumatize people who speak the original language by pronouncing them all wrong

I really hate this sort of take. someone saying "we're better than this" is speaking aspirationally! you are not clever for insisting we aren't, you are giving people an excuse not to try to be.

they think the need for said legitimation is just woke gay shit that some female phd came up with, and they can just be TUFF. having never lived in a place or time where the state did not have a monopoly on violence they don't know that they're the weak men that good times produce.

I think the thing that's hard to convey is: 1.) The Trump 1 economy was pretty good. 2.) Mostly because it was just continued (good) trends from the Obama admin. 3.) So people thought he was good at Economy 4.) But he actually doesn't know how to do stuff that isn't "continue Obama trends"

We cannot punish them all, and we therefore should not attempt to do so. Our goal should be to scapegoat a handful and force the rest to pretend they were always against it, until they almost believe they really were.

The really fun part was when super soaker started making the nerf equivalent. Vastly more accurate than Nerf guns at the time. We ran room to room clearing operations in my basement with them and they really drilled into you that if they could see you, they could kill you.

I think a lot about how there were many movies like that when I was growing up and now nothing. in todays looks-maxing, influencer world, glow up movies like that either don’t appeal to teens anymore or their absence is contributing to the problem. I don’t know if it’s cause or effect.

Anthropogenic carbon emissions are likely to drop precipitously in our lifetimes, and I think we'll try various forms of cheap geoengineering to make up for the carbon we've emitted so far and we'll probably succeed at blunting the worst effects of climate change

price and makes life better. There's a lot of Reagan baked in that - strong private property rights, cutting red-tape, free-market capitalism, supply side economics, etc. I'm sure he and Mamdani differ on public housing's role but I don't think they are as far apart philosophically as some think.

1. He signed it but I don't think anyone realized in the early 70's how NEPA/CEQA would get weaponized against literally everything people wanted to build. 2. The core ideas of YIMBY are people should be able to build what the market demands on their property and that increasing supply drives down

anyway yes there's work to be done, but it's on the level of "robust Congressional oversight and immediately asserting a democratic admin civilian control to scare the hoes," not "we have to denazify the entire DoD over the course of a decade"

Man, you have to be just...really racist...not to come away from spending basically any time at all at an American university with a nearly boundless faith in the power of American assimilation. All sorts of students whose ancestors came from all over, utterly and completely American, all the way.

Is there a direct reduction in inflammation or as a side effect of the weight loss?
000
Matt Hiatt @mthiatt.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
Do we think the knee pain reductions reported were due to weighing less (less stress on the joint) or an independent effect (anti-inflammatory?)?

Given what we are learning about LLM's and the connection of language to intelligence, there is probably something to be said for creating the language first and using it to derive knowledge of the speakers of it and their way of thinking.

In practice though, it really seems like we're moving towards, "AI is a productivity tool that enhances the employee you have, but often doesn't really let you replace them, so much as get more out of them, in some fields. In others, it's mostly useless so far."

It’s a theological gap (seriously). if your theology of work only has value for things that are personally satisfying (your calling) vs valuing work because it gets things done that someone/somewhere needs, you end up with 1% happy and 99% miserable.

People don’t realize renewables growth is a logistics curve. It looks exponential because we’re in the easy middle of the electrification curve but it will taper off when it hits some of the use cases below. You will need nuclear to finish decarbonizing.
