A record-breaking El Niño could bring a colder winter to the UK ❄️ @dspi-oxford.bsky.social's Dr Chloe Brimicombe explains how changes in the Pacific Ocean can influence UK weather ⬇️ bit.ly/4zsrAKo
A person walks through heavy rain on a city street, holding a black jacket over their head for shelter. They carry a brown shoulder bag, with cars visible in the background. White text on a dark blue banner reads: ‘A record-breaking El Niño is still developing – likely bringing a cold winter to the UK’. Below is ‘ox.ac.uk/news | University of Oxford’.

Why is a retired banjo playing, public school nepo-baby on the BBC's flagship Newsnight commenting on the Red Wall? And why no mention that: Winston Marshall only has a political platform because his Dad is billionaire Paul Marshall... owner of GB NEWS and the Spectator.

The quiet London suburb of Surbiton became the capital of British eccentricity after staging a ‘downhill skiing’ event in which participants strapped lumps of ice to their feet and slid down a track slicked with water and detergent.

The University of Nottingham is shutting down its Department of Music. The destruction of the humanities is a political project that goes beyond U.S. borders, and can't be divorced from the adoption of AI in the sectors it's least able to replace: education, creative thinking, knowledge production.
I am sorry to confirm that the University of Nottingham has chosen to close the Department of Music. This includes the termination of three undergraduate Music programmes.

Music at Nottingham has run for more than 100 years and the Department pioneered the study of Music Education in universities. It's a tragedy to see such a heritage come to an end. Our solidarity is with colleagues in UoN's Modern Languages and American and Canadian Studies departments who are facing similar news today.

The Tory party has killed itself with Brexit. It’s lost its mind chasing Farage into the gutter, saying unserious things, promoting unserious people who stand around in suits, arms folded, talking utter dribble to get a headline. It’s pathetic. We deserve a better opposition. This lot are shite.

England is a made up thing. It has no basis in the ineluctable laws of nature. Its extent is defined by Edward II getting his arse handed to him. Athelstan conquering York. The Welsh of Cumbria were incorporated, the Welsh of Gwynedd were not. It is a political idea, an aspiration - not taxonomy.
