Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Thinking about the moms who never imagined their tiny little boys could grow up to be monsters. Praying they love their sons enough to demand accountability. This is about Cornell, but it’s also about America.

Yes, and providing an atmosphere in which Ss have a consistent “team” to depend on (made of other students) AND are actively collaborating with others outside of that team. Because when they report back something they learned or were taught to question, a TON of that child’s authentic self shines.

Collect theme ideas as a class. Number them. Then have the kids write down the number of the theme they see the most—and the name(s) of the character(s) who they think support it best. As you discuss characters, have students write the type of conflict affecting a certain character the most.

It’s often necessary and energizing to mobilize through shared opposition. But this form of solidarity will always stagnate if we can’t also recognize what we love in common and imagine what we hope to build together. As usual, I think the preschool classroom offers some wisdom in finding balance.

Many many people in this country cannot recognize Islamophobia because they are swimming so deeply in it on a daily basis and have so internalized it that it isn't actually legible to them as racism. It's why it's so casually deployed in a way that other forms of racism in the country are not.
