I predict we'll need gyms for our brains too, once Al

Hey, ProPublica reporter Jake Pearson here. I’m taking over the account to tell you about my new story. For months, I posed as a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company's "responsible gaming" safeguards. Spoiler alert: They made me a VIP — and I lost $10K. Here's how it all went down. 🧵

This is also quite embarrassing for Nature, given that their author policy requires "Declare AI use transparently. If an AI tool helped generate text, data analysis, or content, acknowledge it in the Introduction, Preface, or Acknowledgements." Why did this guy get a pass instead of a hard reject?
Then the handling editor wrote back. Two AI-detection tools had classified the piece as 100% AI-generated. She invited me, very politely, to rewrite it in my own words or, if the result was wrong, simply to confirm that I had written it. She did nothing wrong. She was careful, fair and open to the possibility that the tools were mistaken. Still, the message landed hard. In this case, however, the result touched something real. AI had generated almost all of the final prose. For a few days, the distinction between writing with AI and having AI write for me suddenly felt rather thin.

We’ve all got work to do
Well sure I work at the consent factory but in a different department than where they actually manufacture the consent. I’m on a whole other floor. They have a real strict firewall set up so it’s basically none of my concern. Same cafeteria yes but who’s really going to quibble with that. How many cafeterias do you expect a building to have? We’re all people and we gotta eat haha. Nevertheless every morning from the moment I walk through the revolving doors to when I scan my ID at the security desk I do a whole petulant teenager in the backseat on the way to church routine so anyone who might be watching knows that I don’t want to be there. That I don’t approve of what I do for a living. What they do I mean. Unless one of the guys from the prestige department is around then I straighten right up like daddy just got home. They’re in the same building too. Then I sit at my desk waving my hand in front of my face all day like someone farted while I’m busy at my work. Which is trying to change things from the inside by the way.

I'll summarize this: Mamdani asked NYers to keep air conditioning at 78 degrees. A wave criticism hit online. A MSNBC broadcast pointed out the US Department of Energy recommends that 78 degree figure. Immediately after, the US Department of Energy deleted 6,000 web pages related to energy saving.

Rap hip hop is a very small piece of black American culture. We built the most powerful nation in the world while under the heel of systemic white supremacy and we don't flee our homeland like everyone else does. You can never speak on black American culture
