This needs to be taken seriously. Along with underfunding, Doug Ford is destroying the university system. And yes, this latest move is 100% in line with what we've seen happening by state-level MAGA-hats in the US.

This is sort of a throughline in cases of excessive force used by law enforcement. The civilian is supposed to perfectly adhere to some unwritten code of conduct; the armed professional supposedly trained for such situations is only human & must be given lattitude if they succumb to fear and rage.

Quite frankly, it’s outrageous that Mark Carney is cutting Statistics Canada. If he was Stephen Harper or Pierre Poilievre, I feel like this would be getting a lot more backlash. Carney of all people should know the importance of high-quality data and information about the country.

This is an act of self-harm to Canada. Especially coming at a time when the United States is destroying its own statistical capacity and reliable data has never been more needed. It's another signal that this Liberal government sees no value in the work of government. Utter, utter foolishness.

Gets at one of the dynamics rotting away at everything: People are inclined to trust "influencers" more than "the media." But influencers have no ethics rules and can take payouts for coverage. Outside the media, how many people know that we can't even let a source buy us dinner?
