Fun little UV trick I stumbled on because I'm really stubborn about how long I keep my mirror modifier active: Giving mouth textures a "profile" view when I slide them away from the mirror point #b3d

Moving the mouth's UVs slightly to the right breaks the mirror, revealing the left side of the mouth sprite (flat edge)

From the side, the revealed left side of the mouth looks like an intentional anime-style mouth viewed from the side

Made a simple little Geometry Node vertex (well, face corner) lighting system that uses a bone as a "light" and saves the dot product per face corner as an attribute that the shader can then reference as a simple mask between colors #b3d

Screenshot of a Geometry Nodes setup to calculate the dot product between (normalized vector pointing towards a given bone) and (face corner's normal). I used face corners instead of vertices because I really like my sharp edges (see the nose shadow). The other transforms of the bone are also stored for use in the shader (scale affects threshold/easing and rotation switches between cel/smooth shading)

i've started to learn blender and i gotta say, it's resulted in some really boring anecdotes. to take one example, yesterday i intended to keyframe-shift an object to 15.5 on the z-axis, but mistakenly entered 15.5 on the y-axis instead! thankfully i realized and corrected my mistake some time later

i completely fucking forgot how good this method can look, the last time i looked at it, it looked crummy so i was considering abandoning it the plane is solidified and has two textures kinda like an inverted hull would-- they're identical textures but the one on top has the transparent cut outs

This is one of those techniques that seems so obvious in retrospect. If you want an object space texture on an animated character without committing to a baked texture, you can just put a geometry node up top to store the original position in its own attribute, before the Armature modifier

A lot of folks ask about the outline effect I made for Dog Nightmare. It renders the model twice; the outline pass checks the direction of lights, and scoots each vertex toward them based on brightness. It's also more sensitive to distant light, so it pops out in dark conditions! #GameDev #TechArt
