UPDATE: They apparently sent me a text message with the reason, but I didn’t have service there. Upon return to Montreal, I received a text saying that it’s because the Air Conditioning wasn’t working for part of the trip… lol can you imagine Via doing that?

Look, it’s easy to pick on Via Rail, but Sweden’s national rail just did something I don’t think I ever could have expected… they sent me an email apologizing and a credit for 705 SEK ($100 CAD). Nothing has gone wrong. The train is on time. My prepaid meal is quite good! I even got a free coffee.
Screenshot of an email reading:

We want to compensate you
Unfortunately, things don't always go as planned. We apologize for this and offer you a voucher as compensation.

The voucher can only be used when purchasing new journeys on sj.se or in our app. Simply enter the voucher number at checkout.

3 panel comic titled “Logging into Bluesky”

Panel 1:
A Pink Guy bursts into Bluesky wearing a t-shirt that says “Fun”. His little face looks so happy.

Panel 2:
Six Bluesky users turn to look at the Pink Guy. They all look dour and angry because they have been overdosing on the discourse. Having the current state of the world mainlined into their veins for 22 hours a day has left them real grumpy.

Panel 3:
Pink Guy slowly removes his t-shirt and quietly says “sorry”. He won’t soon forget that Bluesky is the home of Serious Discussion. If he wants “Fun” maybe he should log into the Barney the Dinosaur forums.

Kind of incredible that The Odyssey 70mm IMAX screenings are still 100% sold out two months after release, on a random Thursday afternoon in Montreal. A cinema employee just explained that there are no normal ads and trailers because it’s a film projection. But we are getting a film Dune 3 trailer.

Layoffs in the game industry (or any industry, really) suck. They can really suck when it's a worker-owned co-op. But maybe a worker-owned company is also the best way to handle layoffs. This announcement is sad, but admirable in some ways. I hope those affected feel the same.
A screenshot from a KO_OP newsletter release, saying:

With great sadness and respect, over the next few months KO_OP will be saying goodbye to 13 members of our team. This decision was made to ensure the survival of the studio and we deeply regret it's necessity and the negative impact on our colleagues lives.

KO_OP has been making games for nearly a decade and a half and our project funding has primarily come from publishers and platform partners. The games funding landscape has changed radically over the last few years and unlike previous project cycles, this time we have been unable to secure funding for new products while developing our current engagements.

As with all our company's operational decisions, this one was made democratically and was motivated by the survival of the studio rather than maximizing profits. Our members are regularly updated on our cash flow situation and were made aware of this upcoming shortfall well in advance. Membership then appointed a group to plan for this eventuality and ratified their recommendations. Team leads and our elected executives will also be impacted by these reductions we believe this level of transparency and accountability ought to be a minimum requirement for all organizations.

Young Suns will be reaching new platforms, with new content and features. We're all tremendously proud of it and hope it will find its audience. Our byelaws ensure that any profits from Young Suns will still be shared with impacted team members. Our goal now is to develop new game concepts and prototypes will continuing to support Young Suns. In the event that we secure funding in the coming months our intent is to rehire as many of our colleagues as possible.

In the coming days, we will be sharing a list of impacted workers in the hopes of helping them find new work.

We thank you for your support.

A screenshot of the attached article, showing the third place winner of the "ig noble" prize: "Physics: The splashless urinal. A team of students led by Kavee Thurairajah at the University of Waterloo in Canada worked out that urinal splash is almost entirely eradicated if the stream strikes the urinal at less than 30 degrees. They went on to design a urinal whose shape ensures minimal splash regardless of the user’s aim. 'I am very proud,' said Dr Zhao Pan, who runs the lab."

An image below shows a generic image of a set of urinals in a washroom.

I don't know Jake Landau, but there's a certain irony in talking about journalistic standards while simultaneously making allegations and talking about people without reaching out for comment. Jake can say what he wants about Jesse hosting a mayoral debate, but this is a mess of an article.
Screenshot of Jake Landau's opinion piece with the text "At least, the journalists with standards left," highlighted, followed by, "Canadaland’s reputation has increasingly gone down the shitter, as earlier this summer Mr. Brown and Canadaland settled a defamation case against Theresa Kielburger, acknowledging that his allegations that she had embezzled funds from the WE Organization were “unfounded” and “wholly retract[ing]” them. The total financial costs were over $800K Canadian Dollars, a settlement larger than what most courts have been awarding after trial for similar cases."

A few possible options. If I want to sound interesting as fuck, the narrator of Ken Burns’ Jazz docuseries, Keith David (also known for many other fantastic films). For a more realistic portrayal of my life, I would happily take Jonathan Goldstein.

In the context of the quoted statistics, I understand this sentiment and can kind of agree with it. I would add that younger generations have been extremely let down by establishment politics and see things as not getting done in the current system. Authoritarianism would fix that (but also be bad).

Back in 2020 (pre-pandemic surprisingly!) a dev made a Mario 1 clone called Super Bernie World where you play as Bernie Sanders. The”Koopas” are “Mitch McConnell”. Didn’t think I’d have a chance to ever bring this up, but it feels relevant. I can’t remember if Graham is in it.
A screenshot of the game Super Bernie World where you see Bernie jumping in a Mario-like Level and a flying koopa suspiciously looks like Mitch McConnell.
