Yes, but much more than that... we should not be mischaracterizing Level 2-capable vehicles as capable of "self-driving" as this article does. The below is not true. Whether the vehicle is equipped with "Full Self-Driving (Supervised)" or Comma, the vehicle is at *no time*, "driving itself".

Over the weekend, a man going by Mike LaBarbera on X posted a video of his Tesla Model Y driving itself using Comma Four, the latest version of Comma AI’s self-driving hardware.

If we are going to talk vibes, then I will offer some anecdotes in talking with people in the Midwest (since ~2013*) as an economic coalition builder of sorts. One clear trend that I have noticed is that companies, post-Great Recession, really stopped investing into their people.

Note that despite some Southeastern #Michigan officials seemingly counting on it.. it is increasingly unlikely that a federal bailout is coming to Michigan ever again. For anything. Michigan has lost - and is still losing - substantial amounts of political capital since 2008. It's a choice.

It’s not the loss of farmland to those that pay close attention in already-underperforming local and state economies (like Michigan), it’s the outsized costs of creating new sprawl. Granted most Michiganders are not thinking about that, but a few of us are. Newspapers should analyze that.

Important to note, in my view, that Starship cannot fail. Will not be allowed to fail. Not in these market, political and military conditions. So the achievement involved is substantially diminished by that because there is no program failure risk. There is, effectively, an unlimited budget.

It cannot be understated how much trouble Michigan is in. #Michigan cannot afford its roadway network. Now, Metro #Detroit cannot afford its sprawling, bloated water system. To bail this system out would be to endorse the highly-destructive sprawl that created the issue. A downward spiral.

As a #robotics engineer, I am going to throw a bit of cold water on this. Robotics is a domain where research is generally VERY FAR away from practical utility - and despite the rapid addition of, say, Astra capabilities for segmentation, spatial nav and etc, the deployment gaps have barely budged.

The thing that frustrates me so much on this is that… SO MANY fucking people come into Downtown #Detroit on the weekends from the burbs to do whatever. So there is this intense, casual interest in Detroit living. But we got so little downtown housing stock. It’s such an unnecessary own goal.

Shocker. Confirming what I said about a week ago with respect to humanoid #robotics. I just do not see it outside of a very small subset of human activities. Deployment in a general factory, where there is ample opportunity for already-highly flexible, domain-specific robotics is a non-starter.

The hands are the hard part
Musk has promised human-level dexterity for Optimus. Getting there at scale is proving painful.

Per The Information, the hand and forearm contain over 100 screws and small components that workers still assemble by hand. Fixtures on several stations, including hands, joints, and electronics testing, can’t consistently line up parts that are far smaller and tighter-tolerance than anything on a car. The result is more robots needing rework after coming off the line.

Durability is its own problem. Some of the hand’s touch sensors have had reliability issues, and Tesla’s fix is a replaceable “sensing glove” that it plans to add next year so it doesn’t have to swap the whole hand.

Then there’s the supply chain. Tesla relies on outside suppliers, many in China, for motors and the precision gears that drive the joints. Some of them can make good parts in prototype quantities but struggle to keep quality consistent at higher volume.

The media is compromised in many ways. It’s stuffed full of tech optimists who want to believe the narratives of industry figures, alongside people who crave access above all else and know their bread is buttered by staying in the industry’s pocket. But you also have people who really don’t understand digital technology much at all, and certainly not artificial intelligence, so when an influential tech figure is making catastrophic warnings, the tendency is to believe them. After all, they wouldn’t be so wealthy and powerful if they couldn’t be trusted, right? But media also relies on audiences, and the sensationalism of claims that AI could destroy humanity has proven impossible to resist, even for many outlets that should know better.

If the media cared about factuality over sensationalism, it wouldn’t be echoing the lies of the tech industry. Instead it would challenge the self-serving narrative they’re trying to sell to the public. It may seem as though presenting your product as dangerous would be bad for your company, but all it does in practice for AI companies is make them more powerful. Somehow, they’re treated as having the answers to the supposed problems they’re creating, thus shifting the regulatory conversation away from real issues to imagined threats.

No, the real threat, according to these supposed geniuses, is that in ten years AI could break free from its human developers and decide it wants to kill humanity. If you’re big into science fiction, you might recognize that kind of a narrative: whether HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey or The Terminator himself, this notion that our technology will come for us makes for compelling entertainment.

For more than a decade, people in the tech industry have been slowly deluding themselves into thinking those science fictional storylines were far closer to being realized than they are in practice. They think our future is one where we need to merge with computers, cover the face of the planet with data centers, and eventually start building them on other planets to fill with digital “people.”
