For regular programming work, I am actually back to largely writing my own code again (outside of Bazel boilerplate stuff). And then bouncing ideas off Claude afterwards. For hard industrial work, Opus 5.5 still struggles. But Lean generation for hard real time system proofs is a major boost.

FWIW. One of the things that I am actually having a ball on with Claude Code is... walking through large, open-source codebases that contain complex mathematical concepts. And having Claude Code just punch up micro example programs and micro tests along the way to aid in my understanding.

100% & it really can't be said clearly enough that the deaths from AV development caused by tesla & uber were fully preventable w the right regulations & oversight bodies & the same will be true w gen AI. the issue in both cases is deployment on the general public with no accountability, not R&D.

when emerging technologies are guided by long-termist utilitarianism, the public gets the deaths and doesn't get the benefits, while the Musks and Kalanicks get vast wealth... the current LLM/AI space is different in many ways, but utilitarian arguments should still be a massive, screaming red flag

I don't know who needs to hear this, but the autonomous vehicle developers who most vocally argued that society must accept a certain number of deaths to enjoy the technology's safety benefits (Tesla & Uber ATG) were the only ones who killed people and never actually delivered on their promises

Industry media at the time, given the novelty of relatively affordable, desktop FEA tools in full 32-bit color, were confident that mechanical *engineering* was the next profession that was done for. Many don't remember that. Repeat nonsense for CAD-based automation in the LLM Era, I submit.
130
Adam Cook @motorcityadam.com · 21h
So a note about this. The brand new accessibility of powerful, 3D CAD software on commoditized Windows NT machines - along with now-defunct FEA tools like Mechanica (bought by PTC) - was the beginning of the end for hand drafting and dedicated drafters (computer or otherwise) as a profession.
131
Adam Cook @motorcityadam.com · 22h
Wow. PTC is being bought. As a Pro/ENGINEER (now Creo) user since R19 in the late-90s, it has been a journey. Pro/ENGINEER was the first commercial parametric, feature-based 3D solid modeling software. It was a BIG change from the digitizer, wireframe days. Schneider doing a Siemens PLM play.

The ladder pulling in the big labor unions has been apparent for some time as there are no longer *small independent*, hard floor labor unions to compete with anymore. All of this said, I believe in labor organization, but the left does need to be careful with old-line unions.
030
Adam Cook @motorcityadam.com · 23h
Under Biden, and in the wake of COVID labor shortages, many unions (including the Teamsters and the UAW) saw *outstanding* labor wins that I thought impossible. So with those contracts in hand, and a 4-6 year gap until the next one, many rank-and-file were free to surface their conservative side.
120
Adam Cook @motorcityadam.com · 23h
Immigration has *always* been a touchy issue. Racism and misogyny are *pervasive* in manufacturing. And LGBTQ+ folks have always been virtually locked out. After Reagan, many consolidated and prioritized labor organization protections and pushed down these conservative desires temporarily.
100
Adam Cook @motorcityadam.com · 23h
Anyway. It is important to realize that many old-line manufacturing and labor unions are pretty conservative in their rank-and-file. This is true of USW, IBEW and UAW and good portions of the Teamsters. They are blue insofar as protecting labor organization rights and the benefits of that.

A few things, since I have been working hard floors since I was 16. For Sean O’Brien specifically… That shithead is a scab. That shit has been shining his seat its whole life. What set it off this past presidential election? His transgender bigotry - as @erininthemorning.com noted at the time.

The post u r quoting is not correct. The small business in the defense industry do not directly manufacture products but supply parts. These parts are stored in advance of the production schedule. This schedule is set by the government months or even years in advance and is tied to Congress $$$.

These shops take on custom, high-mix and low-volume jobs that are a very poor fit for extensive automation - and over-automation is a major business risk given the CapEx involved. They are, in fact, highly-resistant to any foreseeable automation. a16z seeks to destroy that I guess. Figures.

One could argue that there are *some* areas of large-scale #manufacturing that the US should seek to re-onshore. But one of US manufacturing's unique strengths *is* how a very small and very wide collection of small manufacturers moved *up* the value chain in response to foreign competition.

Adam Cook @motorcityadam.com · 04/10/2026
Oh no. How horrible. We can't have small manufacturers below 5 employees. Time to deploy dimwitted Silicon Valley capital to crush them.
A social media post by a16z (@a16z) featuring text and a horizontal bar chart titled "America's Machine Shops Are Small Businesses" (U.S. machine shop firms by number of employees, 2022).

**Post Text:**
"America has 16,876 machine shops.
83% employ fewer than 20 people. Just nine employ more than 500.
New defense companies are moving from prototypes to mass production, and every missile, drone, ship, and rocket they ultimately produce needs to run through one of these small shops.
That friction is a national security liability.
Connor Love and Collen Larson on the next generation of American manufacturing that gets built by smoothing it: a16z.news/p/the-case-for..."

**Chart Breakdown:**

* **Fewer than 5 employees:** 7,954 firms (47.5%)

* **5 to 9 employees:** 3,274 firms (19.6%)

* **10 to 19 employees:** 2,715 firms (16.2%)

* **20 to 49 employees:** 1,930 firms (11.5%)

* **50 to 99 employees:** 587 firms (3.5%)

* **100 to 249 employees:** 238 firms (1.4%)

* **250 to 499 employees:** 30 firms (0.2%)

* **500 or more employees:** 9 firms (0.1%)

Frankly, part of the long arc of few taking Detroit seriously - public officials and much of the electorate alike. The city council is a complete joke. There is no competence or leadership there. We can’t have accountability if the city is habitually unserious.

Maybe an aside, but this is actually been part of a long slide towards the Death of Expertise that Musk and the VCs that orbit Musk have been working on for more than a decade. And it has clearly materialized physically now given who is running the highest levels of US government and public health.

I think that *a lot * of the LLM conversation space is full of nonsense, frankly. Much more than any previous technology cycle. LLMs provide a false image of near-magical qualities to laypeople across a myriad of domains. And so. If no one is an expert in anything anymore, why try to keep up?

Remember when GM had a BrightDrop BEV delivery van business way back in 2021? And FedEx was one of the first BrightDrop customers. And then GM shitcanned it in 2025? A market now ceded to a manufacturer based in California. GM cannot run a long-term capital program to save its life.

Why not commit to opening up an Amazon *engineering* office in Downtown #Detroit? Detroit has not benefitted much, to date, from the Internet Age. But Amazon is not offering *those* wages, benefits and other high-value economic components. I thought that we were all equals in this together?
2. Providing Jobs & Economic Benefit
We create thousands of skilled jobs between construction and long-term data center operations, supporting local families and helping local small businesses thrive.
We pay nationally competitive wages that often exceed the local and national median, and provide healthcare benefits from day one on the job.
We prioritize local hiring and procurement wherever possible, providing economic opportunity and impact to residents, local contractors and service providers.

This was an absolute disaster for the Midwest - and especially for states like #Michigan. Urban freeways wrecked once-wealthy cities and were exclusively used as a racial segregation instrument. None have recovered to pre-WW2 population levels. But Matt Garman at AWS leads with it as a positive.
One of the big lessons that the United States took from World War II was the need for national transportation infrastructure back at home. A system of interconnected highways, bridges, and roads was critical for national defense and would also provide much needed economic prosperity following the war. In 1956, the government began to build the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways, an infrastructure project larger than anything the country had seen since the railroads a century earlier—and paid for entirely with taxpayer money.
