#SpacetoberChallenge Day 2: Galaxy In our house, we often say, "I'm a Galaxy" when we begin to spiral for any reason at all, whether it be humorous or serious. So I when I think of a galaxy, I think "spiraling". Featuring an artistic interpretation of a (of course) spiral galaxy. #sciart #spaceart

For #spacetober_challenge day 2: galaxy - astronomer Vera Rubin (neé Cooper, ‘28-‘16) & her discovery that angular motion of galaxies deviates from predictions, 1st evidence for dark matter, now known as 5x as common as matter & the stuff which dictates dynamics of galaxies & 🧪🐡👩🏼‍🔬🔭 #histsci
My linocut portrait of astronomer Vera Rubin with short hair, glasses and resting her face in her hand in burgundy on a background of outer space with stars and galaxies in black with blue and pink splotches to mimic how dust bends light in space. At the base of the print is a large spiral galaxy with a plot of orbital velocity versus distance going out from its centre (so the distance axis is indeed distance from centre). There are two lines labelled “observed” which goes up from the origin and then is a pretty flat wavy line all the way across. This line marks the bottom of Rubin. Below it is a wide empty gap of visible white paper down to the second line labelled “predicted”. The Predicted line goes up from the origin to a peak where it diverges from the observed and falls smoothly back down in a gentle curve.

If you wanna go fast, go alone. If you wanna go far, go together 🌎 A sentiment I consider to be Artemis Il pilot Victor Glover's catchphrase at this point. He has said it many times, but it is a message worthy of repeating. We go to the Moon, we go far, and all because we go together. #sciart

Are You Ready??? #ArtAdventCalendar
#ArtAdventCalendar Guidelines
Art can be almost anything. Paintings, drawings, sculpture, textiles, beading, photography, digital. If you think it's art and it beautifies the timeline then post it. No NFTs or Al art please
PLEASE USE ALT TEXT
It does not matter if you "posted it last year".
You don't need to be a "professional" artist. If you make art at any experience level and want to show it off and make others happy, this is the event
Art must be original and it must be yours or from a family member with permission. Please don’t post works from other artists, old masters etc
Art does NOT have to be seasonal. It can be pretty much any subject, but please keep it family friendly-ish
Please don't cross post with just links to other platforms. Most links to other social media sites don't show with images at all and if they do they are usually thumbnails
Please do not post prices or use BUY NOW kinds of posts. We are bombarded with hard sell at this time of year and that's not what this is about. This is not meant to be a sales pitch. You can post links to your website if you like
Please share posts and follow participating artists. This is both an exercise to build a following of art lovers and to build a supportive community of fellow artists. If you like someone else's work, let them know!
As "organizer" I do my best to share all art during the month but if I miss a post, please don't take it as an insult or commentary on your work. There are a lot of posts and I will miss a few. Note that I won't share posts that contain prices or buy now content
Post daily or as much as you can with the hashtag #ArtAdvent Calendar There is no specified time to post. It's a worldwide event so time you post isn't that important
Don't worry if you miss a day or two. Post even if you only have 1 thing to show off that makes the timeline brighter
While the event dates are the 1st to the 24th, feel free to continue to post until the end of the month if you like

Time for a #spaceart showcase? Yeah, I thought so. I created these with various software, mostly #Blender, #photoshop and #3dsmax #SciArt
This illustration shows the gas giant Saturn with some of its many satellites in front. In the foreground is Rhea, the second largest moon of this planet, after Titan. With a mean diameter of 1528 km (764 miles), Rhea is about half the size of our own Moon. Its surface is heavily cratered, with two very large impact basins and numerous fractures. Its density suggests it is made up of about one-quarter rock and three-quarters water ice. Four other Saturnian moons can be seen in the distance, close to the ring plane. From left to right they are Dione, Mimas, Enceladus and Tethys. An artist's impression of Charon as it might appear from the surface of Pluto. In this depiction, Charon's phase is new - i.e. the Sun is directly behind it. Therefore Charon is only visible by the faint sunlight that Pluto reflects onto it from the Sun. Because Pluto and Charon are tidally locked, they keep the same face towards each other at all times, as the Moon does to the Earth. So if one stood on Charon (or Pluto) the other world would stay fixed in the sky - never setting or rising, but still cycling through its phases. And if one were on the wrong hemisphere of Pluto (or Charon) one would never see the other world. The New Horizons probe recently revealed that Pluto has clouds in its atmosphere, as this illustration depicts.Artwork of the Jovian moon Io, seen against the backdrop of Jupiter's Great Red Spot. The latter is a vast, cyclonic storm - wider than the entire Earth - that has raged for centuries. Io, a highly volcanic world, is the innermost Galilean moon of Jupiter.Illustration of a coronal mass ejection emanating from the Sun. These events, CMEs for short, are powerful releases of solar charged particles (plasma) and magnetic field, travelling on the solar wind. When a CME hits Earth, it can cause a geomagnetic storm which disrupts the planet’s magnetosphere, our radio transmissions and electrical power lines. They can damage artificial satellites and cause long-lasting power outages. Humans in orbit are also very vulnerable to these events, whose high-energy particles are not shield by typical spacecraft.

#SpacetoberChallenge Day 29 Orbital I never posted this cause visually it’s not very exciting. But I always like this bit of our planetary block poster that taught about gravity assists and orbits. #sciart #spaceart #artchallenge #planets www.chopshopstore.com/collections/...

#SpacetoberChallenge Day 31: Future In the not-so-distant future, the second launch of the SLS rocket & the return of humans to lunar orbit for the first time since the end of the Apollo program. Artemis II. #sciart #spaceart #illustration #art
Illustration of the SLS (Space Launch System) rocket at the center, over a stack of evenly spaced pink rectangles, indicating progress. Surrounding the stack of rectangles and the rocket on either side are the words “Space Launch System” right side up on the left side and upside down on the right side, both in bright green. A pattern of three pink and orange rectangles caps off both the top and bottom of the design. The background of the entire thing, behind all the various elements, is black.

Quick illustration of a space fountain, made in #Blender. These are seemingly impossibly tall structures made possible with a bit of physics. Think frisbee floating on a vertical jet of water. Same concept is use to hold these things aloft. #sciart #scicom

#SpacetoberChallenge Day 31: Future Star Trek’s “Phoenix” was Earth’s first crewed warp-capable ship. A future with an FTL ship launched on the back of an obsolete ICBM leading to an egalitarian society without hunger, exploitation, or material needs would be pretty nice. #Spacetober
A full page view of my drawings to date, with the Phoenix filling the last gap near the middle of the page

The drawing has a hand-lettered title near the bottom “Spacetober Challenge 2025” and my signed initials A close-up of the Phoenix
