Day 15 #SpacetoberChallenge, This #astronaut watching the sunrise on Kepler-16b is a still from our animated #SciArt music video, Potion: Dark Matter. Derived from poster art from "Visions of the Future" NASA/JPL, dissected and animated. Watch the complete film here: youtu.be/Tlng_7g_2wE?...
The purple silhouette of an astronaut looking out towards the lavender mountains as the double suns of Kepler-16b cast a double shadow of the astronaut’s legs expanding in a triangle shape towards the viewer, across the red, rocky terrain. Overlaying text reads "Choose from three 'Out of this World' options..."

I have been traveling so I haven't had the time to participate in #SpacetoberChallenge this year, but I do have two #SciArt patches releasing this month. Voyager's One Light-Day milestone (with nods to Carl Sagan and the "Pale Blue Dot") and a Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope patch. #nasa
An oval patch, the background is the infamous "pale blue dot suspended in a sun beam" that led to Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot. The Voyager probe is zooming away from the inner and outer gas giants. A particle/wave depicts a photon and the patch says "One Light-Day into the Cosmic Ocean", a nother nod to Carl Sagan. A patch for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telscope. The outer border is the shape of the telescope body with its sunshield. Inside a circle is a depiction of the sensor array of the telescope. Outside are the name of the prime contractors and agencies responsible for the telescope.

#spacetober day 16: Jupiter Europa is the smallest of the four Galilean moons of Jupiter, and the second closet to the planet. Its surface is icy and relatively smooth. Impacting meteorites cause melting of the surface, allowing the water to smooth out before re-freezing. 1/2 #spaceart #sciart
Illustration. The landscape of the icy moon or Jupiter, Europa. Jupiter is in the sky to the right. To the left, a geyser is erupting from the surface of Europa. Behind the geyser, the innermost large Galilean moon, Io, can be seen.

#Spacetober Day 16: #Jupiter, the father of the Roman pantheon, the largest planet in our Solar System, a beautiful death trap. Its superfast winds race in bands in opposite directions, creating those wonderful swirls of colour. I love it gets auroras! 🪐 #pixelart #art #spaceart #sciart
Pixel art of Jupiter against a dark navy sky. The giant planet is striped with cream, white, tan and rusty orange bands full of swirls and small storms, with the Great Red Spot glowing red-orange in the lower left. A throwback for Day 17 of #spacetober_challenge prompt Jupiter: In this 3 colour screenprint, I combined Io, both the nympth (in cow-form) of Ancient Greek myth, and Io the large, volcanous moon of Jupiter. I’m interested in exploring the role of myth & imagination in science, & specifically here,
My screen print’Io, myth and moon.’ To make this screenprint, I combined my pencil drawings of cow/nymph Io with ribbons and flower garlands and cloud with a NASA photograph of Io, which I manipulated. The screenprint is one of an edition of 10, printed in yellow (with a hint of lime), magenta and purple, on white paper, 28 cm (11 inches) square.

I’m switching up day 15 & 17, & sharing my ‘Eclipse of Moths’ for #spacetober_challenge prompt ‘moon’. 🧪🐡🔭🦋 The delightful term for a group of moths is an eclipse. This hand-printed lino block print shows 5 of the noctunral moths of Ontario in front of the moon at a lunar eclipse. The 5 moths are:
My linocut print of moon at lunar eclipse in oranges and brown against a very dark sky behind 5 moths: the gorgeous green Luna moth (Actias luna), the yellow and purplish-pink Imperial moth (Eacles imperialis), the Five-spotted Hawk Moth in brown with orange spots (Manduca quinquemaculata), the red-orange, black and cream Virgin Tiger Moth (Apantesis virgo), and the black and white White Underwing (Catocala relicta). In white it reads “An eclipse of” above and “moths” below. I designed the typefaces to suggest the meaning of the words. "Eclipse" is full of crescent moon shapes. "Moths" is written in moth shapes.

#Spacetober Day 8: #Supernova My first animation ever! A star fires off gamma-ray jets, explodes, and the sky goes quiet again. GRB 250314A, the earliest supernova seen yet, after an illustration by Leah Hustak (NASA/STScI) #pixelart #pixelanimation #JWST From the single frame below:

It's #Spacetober day 8, supernova. The searing explosion of a Type Ia supernova marks the end of a white dwarf's life. Its companion star, from which it was accreting gas, is ejected in the event. It will forever speed through space like a cosmic pinball. #SciArt #spaceart
Graphic depicts a supernova explosion. Shells of coloured gas - red, green, orange, white - expand outward from the epicentre. Lower right, an orange star is seen speeding away from the blast, kicked out during the event

For Day 8 #spacetober_challenge prompt supernova: Sophie Brahe (1559 or 1556 -1643) 🧪🐡👩🏼‍🔬🔭 horticulturalist, astronomer, genealogist, & alchemist with the gardens at her brother #astronomer Tycho Brahe’s Uraniborg estate, where she often assisted his research, alchemical tools & illustrations of the
My 11” x 14” linocut portrait of Sophie Brahe, a Renaissance aristocrat in headgear, ruff, dark clothing with medallion on a wide band and a long scarf or other thin fabric draped over her shoulders with her hands folded in front of her and alchemical vessels, printed in dark bronze ink, on a bronze background. In green behind her head is a map of the gardens at Uranienborg, with her head at the centre of the diamond shaped pale green knot garden (geometric planned gardens). This is surrounded by an orchard in darker green with semicircle bump outs on each side of the diamond. The stars of Cassiopeia from De stelle nova are printed in gold on top of everything; there are stars across her chest and ruff and in the garden and the large supernova is above her head
