📊 43.7% estimated to achieve full marks in the MTC. 📖 82.1% estimated to achieve the expected standard in the PSC (Y1). These are the latest national estimates from Insight. @richardselfridge.bsky.social and @jpembroke.bsky.social discuss how these results compare to previous years: buff.ly/3ehCfLn

One way to help, if not completely fix, the mess that schools are in would be to remove the subgroup ‘Send’ from IDSR and national data. Schools would then only put the children on the send register who had genuine send needs.. Children’s progress would be assessed individually.

Primary subject leaders doing CPD and data analysis - whether they're paid a TLR for it or not. 51% of unpaid subject leaders organise CPD, and 45% analyse pupil data. All the accountability, none of the pay.
Bar chart from Teacher Tapp comparing subject leadership activities undertaken by primary teachers, broken down by TLR payment status. Data from 2,350 teachers surveyed on 30th May 2026.
Paid a TLR (N=553) vs Not paid a TLR (N=1,797):

Monitor teaching or learning (e.g. book scrutiny, lesson visits): 80% / 69%
Plan or update the curriculum or scheme of work: 68% / 62%
Analyse pupil performance data: 65% / 45%
Report to SLT or governors: 69% / 51%
Organise or deliver CPD for staff: 74% / 51%
Something else: 20% / 20%
None of the above: 2% / 8%

There is a glaring contradiction at the heart of the white paper that needs discussing: how do you reconcile a push for inclusive schools with an Ofsted framework that rewards attainment at all costs?

So Ofsted are now considering some sort of "similar schools" measure for attainment says used for inspection. Anyone remember this?
An extract from an Ofsted report entitled "STANDARDS ACHIEVED
Beneath is a table showing "Results in National Curriculum tests and the end of Year 6" with columns for 2001, 2002 and 2003. Under each column is a lettered grade. The final column is headed "Similar schools, 2003" again with lettered grades.
The key beneath shows "A - well above average; B - above average; C - average; D - below average; E - well below average"

Talking to more and more Heads that are struggling to cope with the demands of the job. I'm convinced we need to redesign our roles, acutely assess how we spend our time, re-evaluate priorities and change. We can't work the way we did 5 or 10 years ago, the game has changed.

I think Ofsted are mistaking causation for correlation. Whilst low expectations will cause lower than average outcomes, not all those schools with lower than average outcomes have low expectations. Maybe it would help if you recognised this distinction.

The increasing demands on teachers and leaders are becoming unsustainable. We have the push for inclusion, which the new framework punishes. Improved retention has no chance with the increasing demands on teachers and leaders. How are we going to square this circle?

Some cynics might have thought we'd seen all this stuff before, but clearly things have changed: the triangle is now upside-down. 😆
Triangle, with apex at the top, showing four layers from 'All children' at the base, rising through 'School Action', 'School action plus' to 'Statement'
(The pre-2015 SEND model)Triangle, with point at the bottom, showing three layers of support, with 'Targeted' at the broad top of the diagram, then 'Targeted plus' and narrowing to 'Specialist'
