Book 78 of 2026: Paris Celestial by A. Y. Chao The sequel to the delightful Shanghai immortal; Lady Jing travels to Paris with her friends &;a flaccid Irish deity as she discovers more about her family. More of the same witty banter but a lot more anguish. V good but I preferred the 1st book.

The last two times that I have done my weekly Tesco shop, they have been playing songs from The Little Mermaid. At least it wasnt playing while I was in the frozen fish section...

If you wanted to hear two.people praising and examining what made Pac special as a wrestler, then I'd recommend this. It was recorded in 2024, so there are more tangents than you would expect. But it looks at how Pac evolved and how good he was at elevating others. A true veteran for the modern era

I was making potato and leek soup and the recipe asked for five potatoes cubed. Even for potato soup, 125 potatoes seems a little excessive.

I know that @alan4l.bsky.social had a similar experience with meeting a downtrodden Pac after his 1st RoH show. Pac seemed like someone who, at that stage at least, cared so much and wore his heart on his sleeve. And maybe that was part of why SO MANY people he worked with felt this one so hard.

Monkey Buckles @monkeybuckles.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
In another way, that didn't matter. By this point Pac had his 1st Dragon Gate tour and that was what made Pac who he was. Those tours, the time to work his craft, working on a roster with notorious perfectionists like Masato Yoshino... One door closes, another door opens.

A friend of mine from the UK was attending those shows and bumped into Pac at the airport. Pac looked gutted. Just really down, having thought that he had blown his chance for RoH and hurt his chances in the US. In 1 way he was right, in that he never had another RoH match until 2023.

Monkey Buckles @monkeybuckles.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
It sounds like so many people who worked with Pac were drawn to him as a person. Pac's 2007 RoH weekend has a rarely told story. Between this match and the next nights match, Pac did not get a chance to show what he could do. A lot of that was how his opponents laid things out.

Pac was on the first wrestling show that I saw live. He was in the headline match for the first Britwres show that I travelled for. He was just there. The kind of wrestler you took for granted... I can't believe this. Younger than me.

The British Opinion Columnists make sense when you realise they're a clique of Year 10 girls who've all decided to call Kelly From Maths a bitch and a crybaby and a virgin and a slag until she leaves school (one way or the other), except they're 55.

I probably shouldnt be surprised but im still new to Sumo. I just find it funny that on one of the days they said that "yesterday was a good day as all the top rankers won", when talking about the day that Fujinokawa, Churanoumi & Kinbozan all lost and went from being 1 behind to 2 behind.

This is what I've been waiting for! It sounds like it has the wild concept sci fi of the the Machineries of Empire, the destruction/weaponised theft of culture from Phoenix Extravagant and Lee's usual themes. I need to pre-order this.

More spin than the commentators making it clear that the Sumo Association only want Yokozuna's or Ozeki's to win tournaments. ;)

As someone who was inspired by Desert Island Discworld to do my own (inferior) Discworld podcast it would be nice to say hi at TB. Especially after a shambolic and chaotic panel that might just happen at said show.

Did you ever wonder what the dragons are thinking in all those dragon rider novels? Well I wrote a story about exactly that. One curmudgeonly dragon has snuck into the academy and has to keep his identity secret. That means pretending to be tame. No matter how much he wants to devour his rider.

Paris Celestial by A.Y. Chao A snarky protagonist whose parents are Chinese & Western vampires and Chinese hell beauracracy makes for a really enjoyable romp. I really enjoyed Shanghai Immortal, and this one is off to a great start. My last read was Wickhills by Premee Mohamed, which was great.

Yup. I've just watched dsy 6 and the 3 you mentioned were all cracking. All proper back and forth struggles. Plus you have interesting subplots like Shishi somehow having his most impressive basho that Inhave seen in terms of feeling assured and in control instead of clumsy chaos.

Okay, so this has brought a lot of attention to my book PAGANS, which is great, obviously, but also I'm braced for people shouting at me that the Norman Conquest *didn't* bring Christianity to the UK, as you might think from a quick glance at the blurb, it was here already. CORRECT.

I decided to buy some local art today, on a whim. This little guy just looks so cheerful and vibrant.
A light blue glass bird with an orange beak and big eye standing on a small piece of wood. In front of the bird ia a green glass cactus with red spines.
They are only a few centimetres tall.

Book 77 of 2026: Wickhills by Premee Mohamed (@premeemohamed.com) Wickhills is instantly one of my favourite fantasy cities. An incredibly fascinating setting that I want to read more about. Aside from that, it's an excellent spy thriller with fantasy elements and a brilliantly written protagonist.

I worked in the Global R&D that covered PG Tips. As tea is so commoditised (especially something like a PG Tips), a lot of the work back then was using fancier packaging to upsell instead of buying simpler packaging formats. Nestle even launched a Nespresso type machine for tea.

Going through an art museum and wow, those Vienna lads could NOT be bothered doing whole cherubs. So many flying baby head & shoulders. It's like they only paid the artist for headshots on the background characters.

I find myself almost completely unable to visualise anything, so I find myself less likely to bounce off extra flavour/concepts in the world. I'm more likely to bounce off things that are "too" normal. Like I struggle to maintain interest in modern day US/UK set thrillers.

Yesterday, I stumbled across a statue in Budapest that looks like JFK beating the shit out of a hydra with his bare hands.
A head on photo of a statue that looks like JFK punching a hydra in the face.A side on photo of a statue of a man punching a hydra in the face.
He looks less like JFK from this angle (the man, not the hydra).
Budapest is in the background.
