New #Project2052 story alert! "The Fall of Carceral Psychiatry" reminds us that there is no revolution without mad and disabled folks. Meet Gregory Barbie, a mad and blind man from rural Idaho as he recounts his time in a locked psych ward and the eventual fall of carceral psychiatry.

We're seeing a drop off in newborn donations in Minneapolis. Birth workers are seeing small/early babies due to stress/food insecurity—ICE has not stopped—families still in desperate need of support. If you're able, here is a wishlist compiled by folks doing mutual aid www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/...
Operation Metro Love Thy Neighbor
Hello Friends of Operation Metro Love Thy Neighbor! Many of our neighbors in Minneapolis are being targeted based on the color of their skin, their accent, or their country of origin. From a healthcare standpoint, this is leading to very scary outcomes, as patients are terrified to leave home and are foregoing necessary care in an effort to stay safe. For moms and babies, medical professionals scramble to meet these needs and to ensure patient safety. As neighbors and community members, we want to ensure these moms and babies have their needs met in terms of supplies, personal care items, and infant and toddler items. While it's a far cry from a baby shower, we are doing our best to ensure that our neighboring mamas have what they need in times of massive distress. All items purchased on this list will be delivered to me and then immediately sent out into the community for maximum impact. On behalf of all the mama and baby teams, we so appreciate your love and generosity.Black image with white text and white line drawing of a parent holding a baby. Text reads: "Mama + Baby donations needed. All items with an asterisk must be unused. Other items may be gently used. These items will go to immediate homes and be appreciated. [heart emoji] Thank you! ITEMS NEEDED: diapers (size 0-6)*, baby wipes*, pacifiers*, teething items*, free and clear detergent, baby shampoo, baby-safe lotion, infant clothing (all sizes), infant hats, baby blankets, burp cloths, swaddlers, hands-free baby carriers, breastfeeding guards*, feeding pillows, maternity pillows, belly bands, nipple cream*, pimps, infant safe toys, pack + play, epsom salt."

I say all of this because I think the most urgent thing we must do now is reorganize our models of care. This has to become about how we must all care for each other & we cannot rely on “I’ve paid good money so professionals can take care of me” it never worked justly. It is not sustainable.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque: "This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".
Bronze plaque saying "A Letter to the Future. Ok is the first Icelandic glacier to lose its status as a glacier. In the next 200 years all our glaciers are expected to follow the same path. The proposed Chicago city budget has a $5 million line item for a ShotSpotter replacement. Abandoning this failed pursuit would free up the funds needed to maintain 2025 funding levels at our city libraries, which would still leave the libraries underfunded but would avoid disastrous proposed cuts.

Everyone I know is exhausted from the last two months. Exhausted from rushing out on the ding of a Signal notification, exhausted from standing in front of schools keeping watch, exhausted from confronting heavily armed masked agents in tactical gear with nothing more than a whistle around your neck. Exhausted—so exhausted—from being witness to neighbors, friends, and family going missing. Over 3000 people, according to the goons' own count. One was too many. Everyone I know is exhausted. Everyone I know is ready to go another round.

when we win
the masked agents raid our neighborhoods.
what do they cover up? (yesterday) is their promise
& their charge. on 75th and South Shore they ram down
our doors using (yesterday). they toss canisters
of (yesterday) into our children’s lullabies. why?
my people,
we carry (today) & (tomorrow) in twin holsters. we
plant (today) & (tomorrow) in our gardens. every day
there are more sprouts. let it be known: Chicago
will never cower. (yesterday) already died. (yesterday)
is dying. (yesterday) will die again. there is no future
in (yesterday). the agents in our neighborhoods hide
their faces because they are losing. because they lost.
when we win,
there will be whistles from the gulls
circling Lake Michigan. let them sing it:
Chicago is a city of (today) & (tomorrow).
Chicago is the future.

A horrifying statement published today by the Editorial Committee of the Agence France-Presse (AFP) news agency. "Without immediate intervention, the last reporters in Gaza will die" Translation from French to English by @cnorristrent.bsky.social:
Without immediate intervention, the last reporters in Gaza will die
July 21, 2025

AFP has been working with 1 writer, 3 photographers and 6 videographers, all freelance, in the Gaza Strip since its staff journalists left in 2024.

Along with a few others, they are now the only ones left to report what is happening in the Gaza Strip. The international press has been banned from entering the territory for nearly two years.

We refuse to watch them die.

One of them, Bashar, has been working with AFP since 2010, first as a fixer, then freelance photographer, and since 2024, as lead photographer. On July 19th he managed to post a message on Facebook: “I no longer have the strength to work for the media. My body is thin and I can’t work anymore.”

Bashar, 30, works & lives in the same conditions as all Gazans, moving from one refugee camp to another under Israeli bombings. For > a year he’s lived in utter destitution, working at extreme risk to his life. Hygiene is a major issue for him, with recurring bouts of severe intestinal illness.

Since Feb, Bashar’s been living in the ruins of his home in Gaza City with his mother, 4 brothers & sisters and the family of one of his brothers. Their house is devoid of any furnishings, except a few cushions. On Sunday morning, he reported that one of his brothers had “fallen, due to hunger.”

Even though these journalists receive a monthly salary from AFP, it’s no longer enough to buy food, or they have to pay completely exorbitant prices. The banking system has collapsed, and those who exchange money via online bank accounts charge a commission of up to 40%.

AFP no longer has the ability to provide them with a vehicle and there is not enough fuel to allow these journalists to travel for their reporting. Driving a car means becoming a target for Israeli airstrikes. AFP reporters therefore travel on foot or by donkey cart. (alt txt continued in next post)
