Not only is this insane - I also can't believe Tom Cotton is the only thing saving us from this obviously dumb idea that we already tried once and hated Why is there such enthusiasm for this idea for which we have living memory of failing badly?

It is, I fear, far more aggressive and rapid than the American public (and DEFINITELY the American media) would be comfortable with. The bad faith wailing "Can't we just get along?" would be near impossible to resist for the media apparatus to resist in its current form

There's a lot to say about this, and other folks are saying most of it. I just want to focus on one thing: the claim about the relationship between universities and "the real world."

The "guilty pleasure," often just "Camp," a category that worked quite well! And I forget from whom I heard this first, but the existence of Camp implies the existence not simply of Good Taste and Bad Taste, but "A Good Taste OF Bad Taste"

There have been so many EdTech fads in only my own adult life (remember MOOCs?)and they always end up abandoned in disgrace within a few years, doing nothing but enrich early promoters. So much of education is already a solved problem, but we keep trying to shoehorn in something new

That wasn't a cult so much as it was just exploitation for its own sake by the whim of the powerful, which requires even less reinvention

Peter Marino @mondium.ai · 27/09/2026
People just keep reinventing the sex cult every few decades. The binding ideology is entirely fungible and entirely irrelevant; the sex and control are the point The only major innovation this time is that the people doing the reinventing are actually socially powerful.

"Claim" not to have heard? We don't have a national monoculture anymore. I don't hear everything. And yes, I don't listen to country, but I certainly heard Dasha's country hit two years ago. This shit is random

I forget where I saw it pointed out first, but a big part of the mid 20th century success of center right parties is that they absorbed the reactionary vote that had nowhere else to do. In other, institutional conservatives should oppose fascism FOR THEIR OWN INTEREST

Wanting to build a successful entertainment enterprise while also being ideologically committed to a political project that most creative people find somewhere between tedious and actively morally abhorrent is not a recipe for success, shall we say

I would also suggest, at this point, that the assertion of the piece is, in 2026, an insufficiently novel argument to warrant such a brief treatment. Either give us a legitimately different angle on the idea, or give us a lot more depth. As you say the piece is *fine*, but bland

A five-panel meme showing a progression of black-and-white portraits labeled "Opus 4.6" through "Opus 5.5". "Opus 4.6" features a detailed pencil sketch of a smiling man with curly hair and glasses. "Opus 4.7" is a slightly simpler sketch, "Opus 4.8" is a clean cartoon line drawing, and "Opus 5" devolves into a crude, messy child-like scribble with big buck teeth. The final panel, "Opus 5.5", displays an exaggerated, hyper-masculine "gigachad" version of the man with a massively chiseled jawline and confident smile.

It clearly has a sense of taste, though it is unclear whether it's supposed to be sincere, or parody, which we can't know without understanding authorial intent. But the piece itself clearly understands the substance on which it's commenting and what would advance that commentary
