Something really fishy going on with absentee ballots for overseas voters for the American midterms. In all the years I have lived in the UK I have never not received a ballot. This year it seems to have gone missing. What do I do? Any suggestions? Apparently it was meant to have arrived mid-Sept.

📅 #onthisday 30 Sept 1888 Elizabeth Stride and Catherine Eddowes are killed in what became the “Double Event”. Two women, two full lives, later reduced to a myth. Hallie Rubenhold reminds us that justice lies in remembering who they were, not who killed them. 🎧 Listen 👉 pod.fo/e/376763 #otd

A bit more context to this photo - the event was held in the very room where Crippen and Ethel had their hearing in 1910.

A fantastic speaker and a fantastic location We welcomed Hallie Rubenhold back to Bow Street to discuss her latest book, Story of a Murder, in the building where Dr Crippen and Ethel Le Neve had their committal hearing. Hallie detailed how they were eventually brought to justice.

Turned down last week: 2 festivals with no budget for speakers 1 writing course with no budget for teachers 1 film project with no budget to option the book - plus they wanted me to write the screenplay. For free. Don't do it, kids. Don't work for free. Because to them, what's free is worthless.

By all means, do read books in addition to The Five. You’ll find the people who I ‘claim don’t exist’ cited in my bibliography and end notes. For 7 years some people have claimed that I and The Five have dishonoured the victims. Please. Enough of this nonsense.

This really is worth a watch. A mother of mixed-race children in Piddington breaks down when thinking about the bigotry that's been revealed in her village. It's so awful to see how quickly the mask of politeness can fall off to reveal the evil face of racism beneath.

That’s what the fight is all about. Historians do matter, and the historiographies of slavery and the Revolution formed in the final decades of the 20th century& the beginning of the 21st have shaped current-day understandings about so much.

There are many things I often find quite surreal about being a well-known author, but few match that slightly creepy feeling when a stranger (with the help of AI) has written your ‘biography’ and is selling it online. Never mind the AI generated photo on the cover that looks nothing like you.

Despite the heat playing havoc with my focus, 'Story of a Murder' kept 100% of my attention. I consumed (too much?) true crime as a teen, and I was steeped in the Belle Elmore was a terrible wife/harridan narrative. Just like 'The Five', @hallierubenhold.bsky.social has rewired my brain again.
The front cover of a hardback book: Story of a Murder by Hallie Rubenfold. It looks a little battered because it is a library book! At the centre of the cover is a black and white image of Belle Elmore dressed to the nines in a publicity photo for the Music Halls complete with a big feather covered hat and flowers covering the top half of her dress.

On 1 February, 1910, vivacious music-hall performer, Belle Elmore, suddenly vanished from her north London home, causing alarm among her circle of female friends, the entertainers of the Music Hall Ladies’ Guild who demanded an immediate investigation.
