The thing to know about the elderly is that they lose the ability to sense heat with age. So they are likely cooking to death before they realize they are hot. It's why you often find dead elderly heat stroke victims with the windows closed and no AC on. It's why check ins are so important

worth noting here it's not just Wyoming where Republican lawmakers are openly saying they want to boost the state's population by forcing people--even teenagers--into childbirth From a 2024 lawsuit filed by the Attorney Generals of Missouri, Kansas, & Idaho: ballsandstrikes.org/law-politics...
screenshot of three sentences excerpted from the linked article, with the latter two sentences highlighted in green. excerpt reads as follows:

“Remote dispensing of abortion drugs by mail, common carrier, and interactive computer service is depressing expected birth rates for teenaged mothers in Plaintiff States,” the attorneys general allege in the complaint, which was filed before forced birth enthusiast Judge Matt Kacsmaryk in the Northern District of Texas’s Amarillo Division. They claim that decreased births constitute “a sovereign injury to the state in itself,” and causes downstream injuries like “losing a seat in Congress or qualifying for less federal funding if their populations are reduced.” In other words, uteri are state slush funds, and girls owe the state reproduction once they are capable of it.

@nycgovparks.org's tree map is great: full of information, yet somehow still intuitively easy to use. Here's what you see when you click on a particular circle/dot (this one's on a block near my home). Every circle/dot is a tree maintaing by NYC Parks. 🌳 tree-map.nycgovparks.org/tree-map
Screenshot of the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation's "Tree Map" site. I've zoomed into a part of my own neighborhood, Jamaica (in Queens) and selected a particular circle/dot, each of which represents a tree maintained by NYC Parks. On the right is a map filled with dark-green, light-green, reddish-brown, and orange-brown circles lining various streets. On the left, information about that particular tree appears, including its common name, scientific name, closest address, tree ID number, and trunk diameter.

It's impolite to call Musk a genocidal white nationalist because "civility" in American discourse functions not as a neutral procedural norm but as an asymmetric weapon to shield the powerful from accurate moral characterization while policing the tone of those who object.

I don't think people fully appreciate how apocalyptic things are for US science. I haven't had any new funding since 2024, but I'm still ok since typical grants are for three years. This means next year I will be completely out of funding and will have to fire everyone in the lab. It's not great.

Reminder: "separate the art from the artist" is about literary analysis. It means your interpretation of a work is not invalidated by the author saying "nuh-uh". It does not mean "you can consume any media without guilt". You are responsible for your choices. A misused phrase doesn't change that.

A classic anti-masker tactic is to claim that if you don't wear a mask 100% of the time, it isn't worth it. Untrue. Every single time you wear a mask, you reduce the chances for viruses to spread. Wearing a mask always improves public health, even if you only do it occasionally.
@suchnerve
“I don’t want to wear a mask all the time” Alright. Would you please wear it sometimes? Sometimes > never. Like just keep one in your bag, and put it on when you’re in an extra crowded place maybe?
