No one ever gets excited when I ask them if I can show them my ear rot of corn until I show them the starbursts produced by Fusarium inside the infected glass gem corn kernels! 🌽🎆🧫👂🧟 #Mushrooms #FungiFriends
Close up of several rows of an ear of Glass gem corn, an American heirloom flint corn known for its translucent, rainbow colored kernels. Many of the dark colored kernels show firework like starbursts inside each kernel, an indication that the corn has Fusarium ear rot, a common fungal disease.

With spooky season upon us AND free shipping from @bookshop.org for Anti-Prime (Oct 6 & 7), now is a great time to nab a copy of my book Rise of the Zombie Bugs! That’s one heck of a brittlegill mushroom 😍🤩! #Mushrooms #FungiFriends
Known for its muted red cap and white stalk, brittlegills are easily distinguished in the forest on account of their color and brittleness (they easily break into multiple pieces if dropped or thrown). This specimen rises up from brownish leaf litter with the green forest behind it.

Deep in the mountains of West Virginia, I found the exact spot where summer surrendered to an eager autumn! 🍂🍁🍄🍄‍🟫 #autumn

These shaggy manes are basically showing off at this point. Look at those caps autodigest 👀🤩! #Mushrooms #FungiFriends
Shaggy mane mushrooms get their name from their loose scaly cap surface. Pictured are three caps up close with the outside edges turning liquidy black (hence the name inky caps broadly given to these fungi) from self digestion.

Some call it the resinous polypore, others call it the late fall polypore or the benzoin bracket. Whatever you call it, Ischnoderma resinosum is a beautiful fall fungus to find and photograph this time of year here in eastern U.S. #Mushrooms #FungiFriends

I may not have a million dollars or a fancy car, but I sure am good at finding fresh AF edible mushrooms in the woods like this Coral Tooth Fungus (Hericium coralloides) I found the other day! #Mushrooms #FungiFriends
Part coral, part icicle, part fungal firework, this edible white tooth fungus looks out of this world as it bursts forth from a barkless dark spongy wood. It tastes incredible!

How do I know fall is just around the corner? Easy, the sugar maples are supporting giant northern tooth fungi (Climacodon septentrionalis)! #Mushrooms #FungiFriends
Northern tooth fungi have an almost brain-like shape as they grow directly from diseased sugar maple stems! This fungus causes a serious heart rot of maples and beech.

I could literally spend hours staring into the underside of a maze gill mushroom, if only I had the time! #Mushrooms #FungiFriends
Maze gill polypores get their name from the fact that instead of gills or pores, these mushrooms have one of a kind fungal labyrinths carved naturally into their underside.

I’ll know you’ll all be super shocked when I tell you that these bad boys are called dog’s nose fungus! #Mushrooms #FungiFriends
Imagine a dogs wet nose shiny and black and moist except it’s a real life fungus! Remember the last photo when I said imagine a real dog’s nose (wet, shiny, and black) but now make it a fungus? Do it again. Another example. Now imagine if that dog nose (wet, shiny, and black) were in a flaky paper egg with water spit damage which was partially cracked open to reveal the nose. That’s what the early stage of the fungus looks like.

Them: Sorry, I was vacationing at the beach. There’s no mushrooms 🍄‍🟫🍄there obviously! Me (staring lovingly at my photos of sandy Laccaria and common fiber vase #mushrooms that I saw on the beach repeated): Oh, of course, my bad! #FungiFriends
Bright purple gills combined with its sand-covered stalk are dead giveaways of the Sandy Laccaria, a common mycorrhizal fungus that colonizes coastal plants. Common fiber vase is just that - a brown papery vase-shaped ectomycorrhizal fungus found commonly in barrier island plant communities.
