Crop art at the Minnesota State Fair! It is what it says it is - art made from various parts of crops, primarily seeds, lentils, and grains, occasionally leaves or flowers. For any non-Minnesotans viewing this, I'll start with mostly less political pieces. It's harder than you might think.
Untitled? by Jenny Lau
A red heart with radiating lines is in the upper half of the piece. In the middle are two loons, rising up out of the water to either fly or dance. The words "Forever - MN" appear in black at the bottom. The piece is edged in a wavy border. You can see from the seedlist that the inspiration was a Keith Haring drawing on a US "Forever stamp" where people instead of loons are dancing and holding up the heart.

Crops include white sorghum, red sorghum, french lentil, canola, wild rice, garlic skin, and millet. Any others have been cut off by the photographer's (my) carelessness.Untitled? by Alice Hogan
In the center are two traditional portrayals of Vikings, with horned helmets. The left is a bearded man with a photo of Governor Tim Walz's face, and the right character is a female with long blond braids and a photo of Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan's face. She holds a scepter topped by what might be a stalk of wheatand stands next to some miniature ears of multi-colored corn. Below them are the words "WELCOME TO MINNESOTA" in blue and green. Behind the two Vikings are a lake or river with swans, a pink house I don't recognize, and a stylized version of the Minneapolis skyline with some of its landmark buildings such as the Foshay Tower and the IDS Center.

The seed list is partially hidden and partially too blurry to read due to the photographer's (my) inability to take good photos."Pac-MN" by Meredith Keller
This is a 3 dimensional piece in that the yellow frame of it is moved forward and shaped as if it's an arcade game. The screen has a black background. The words "MINNESOTA STATE FAIR 2026" are written in the Pac-Man font at the top left. the rest of the screen has a map of the fairgrounds making the path that Pac-Man can follow, complete with yellow trails. Some of the yellow trails have the street names spelled out on the seeds. The screen also has red and blue ghosts, but instead of the normal bonus icons we see a pickle, an ear of corn, some pronto pups, and a chocolate chip cookie - all popular foods at the MN State Fair.

The seedlist shows yellow painted mustard seed in a Pac-Man shape, and the rest of the seeds are lined up for Pac-Man to eat: red and blue painted mustard seed, black canola, white, yellow, and green millet, white navy bean, yellow soy bean, and yellow split pea.

This entry was awarded a blue ribbon for first place in its category."Minnesota Welcomes You" by Megan Bell
Paul Bunyan, in brown laced up boots, blue jeans, and a pink and ight blue checked shirt and cap, is neeling on the ground. He steadies an axe against the ground in his left hand, while his right hand is outstretched to the viewer. The grass is green, there are autumn colored trees in the background, and a multicolored swirly sky is above. The words "MINNESOTA WELCOMES YOU" are in the foreground.

This piece was made with amaranth, hulled barley, black beans, canola, flax seed, millet, rye berries, and wheatberry. Most of these were painted.

To me it comes down to a really basic observation:
Let’s start with this basic fact: more people voted for Peggy Flanagan in the Democratic Primary (411,856 votes) than voted in the Republican Primary for Senate (406,824 votes). People like to point out how Purple Minnesota is (electorally, not Prince-ly) and I just scratch my head at what world they live in. In 2024, we had a similar situation. Amy Klobuchar received 305,055 votes in a primary as an incumbent and only 194,326 Republicans voted to elect a challenger. What happened? Klobuchar absolutely trounced the incompetent weirdo Royce White by 16 points.

The built the Torment Nexus from Vernor Vinge's Rainbow's End
he was at the bottom of the library’s central stairwell. He looked up and up, into the foreshortened spiral of steps. Tiny flecks of white floated and swirled in the column of light. Snowflakes? But one landed on his hand: a fleck of paper. And now the ripping buzz of the saw was still louder, and there was also the sound of a giant vacuum cleaner. But it was the irregular ripping buzz that echoed down the stairwell and beat him about the head. There was something familiar about that, but it wasn’t an indoors kind of sound. He started up the stairs, pausing at each landing. The dust and the noise were worst at the fourth floor, labeled “Catalog Section PZ.” The door opened smoothly. Beyond would be the library stacks. All the books you could ever want, miles of them. The beauty of ideas waiting in ambush. But this was like no stacks he had ever seen. The floor was draped in white tarpaulin. The air was hazy with drifting debris. He took a breath, smelled pine pitch and burnt wood—and for a moment he couldn’t stop coughing. Brap, painfully loud now, coming from four aisles to his right. There were empty shelves here, a littering of paper scraps and deep dust. Brrap. Against logic, sometimes recognition comes hard. But finally, Robert remembered the exact sound which that abrupt roar must be. He had heard it occasionally throughout his life, but always the machine had been outdoors. Brrrap! A tree shredder!Ahead of him, everything was empty bookcases, skeletons. Robert went to the end of the aisle and walked toward the noise. The air was a fog of floating paper dust. In the fourth aisle, the space between the bookcases was filled with a pulsing fabric tube. The monster worm was brightly lit from within. At the other end, almost twenty feet away, was the worm’s maw—the source of the noise. Indistinct in the swirling haze, Robert could see two white-suited figures, their jackets labeled “Huertas Data Rescue.” The two wore filter masks and head protectors. They might have been construction workers. In fact, this business was the ultimate in deconstruction: first one and then the other would pull books off the racks and toss them into the shredder’s maw. The maintenance labels made calm phrases of the horror: The raging maw was a “NaviCloud custom debinder.” The fabric tunnel that stretched out behind it was a “camera tunnel.” Robert flinched from the sight—and Epiphany randomly rewarded his gesture with imagery from within the monster: The shredded fragments of books and magazines flew down the tunnel like leaves in tornado, twisting and tumbling. The inside of the fabric was stitched with thousands of tiny cameras. The shreds were being photographed again and again, from every angle and orientation, till finally the torn leaves dropped into a bin just in front of Robert. Rescued data. BRRRRRAP! The monster advanced another foot into the stacks, leaving another foot of empty shelvesbehind it. Almost empty. Robert stepped into the aisle and his hand caught on something lying on a shelf. It wasn’t dust. It was half a page, a remnant of all the thousands of books that had already been sucked into the “data rescue” equipment. He waved it at the white-suited workers and screamed words that were lost in the noise of their shredder and the worm tunnel fans. But the two looked up and shouted something back. If the body of the glowing worm hadn’t been between him and them, Robert might have rushed the pair. As it was, they just waved impotently at each other. Then a third guy appeared, behind Robert. This one was an overweight thirty-something wearing Bermuda shorts and a huge black T-shirt. The young man was shouting at him in—what, Mandarin? He waved pleadingly for Robert to follow him back toward the stairwell, away from the nightmare.

Difficult to think of a better example of Silicon Valley billionaire group chat brainrot than someone thinking the best way to combat the billionaire wealth tax would be to... buy up the company collecting signatures for the ballot measure. via @sfstandard.com sfstandard.com/2026/06/13/b...
In an encrypted group chat on Signal, a who’s who of tech titans met to commiserate and toss out solutions: Should they appeal to the governor? Run counter-initiatives? Put up candidates for office?

The members of the chat, some of whom are reported here for the first time, read like a Forbes list of Silicon Valley elite: Google cofounder Sergey Brin, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, former Zynga CEO Mark Pincus, former Sequoia Capital head and chairman of The Standard Michael Moritz, Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan, PayPal cofounder Max Levchin, Sequoia partner Shaun Maguire, Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, Ripple cofounder Chris Larsen, Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong, venture capitalist Ron Conway, Greenoaks Capital founder Neil Mehta, investor and “All-In” podcast cohost David Friedberg, Future Ventures founder Steve Jurvetson and his wife, Genevieve — dozens of tycoons, some of whom were hyper-active in the chat and others who engaged not at all.

“It’s kind of like, ‘Who wasn’t in it?’ to be honest,” said one of two people who saw the chat and described its contents to The Standard. “And it just kept getting added to.”

At some point, a chat participant proposed an action more audacious than lobbying Gov. Gavin Newsom or funding an anti-tax measure: What if the group simply bought the signature-collecting company the union was using, then prohibited it from collecting more signatures?
