Things may not be great most places, but having a spot near home where I can do a six mile run and then soak my legs in a cold creek while catching smallmouth bass on a fly rod makes a big difference in being willing/able to deal with the other stuff.

If you ever find yourself starting a sentence with “not all” just stop. Put the phone down. This is your opportunity to not become part of the problem. Say to yourself: this isn’t about me. Go outside. Touch grass. Choose de-escalation.

The ternary diagram for clay content In this paper is pretty cool. I guess kaolinite doesn’t get invited to many parties without much chemical weathering. Hydrolysis without liquid water isn’t easy.

I am still thinking about the math problem posed by Burger King’s “Have-sies” option. The fry to ring ratio based on calories does not appear to match the fry/ring ratio based on cost.
A photo of the sides menu at Burger King. Fries, onion rings, or “Have-sies” are options, but I can’t calculate the fry to ring ratio using both calories and price

So we know AI helped a negligible number of students. But how many did it harm? I've crunched the raw data provided by the lead researcher, and what I've found is that ~9,500 students using AI studied less than even the *least* studious, non-AI using student. This should shock the conscience.

It’s impressive that autonomous AI agents is only the second most unreal idea in this sentence, behind the magic “press to get data” button. Just a huge devaluing of the process of data collection. Science is not just interpretation of data! There’s a reason many scientists want their own lab.

Funding curve for NSF's geosciences directorate. It is exactly on track to hit the halved budget called for by Trump's proposed budget instead of the congressionally approved budget (which would be slightly below the 2024 curve).

A welcome sign in Houghton that states, “you are now breathing the purest most vitalizing air on earth.”

The AQI was over 700 when I took this photo. The most severe category starts when the AQI is over 300.
