America.gov launched today--a DOGE initiative to use AI to deliver public services. Child lying facedown on a frozen lake as the image accompanying the question: "How can I invest in my child's future" is just incredible. Way to go AI
Image of a child lying facedown on a froze lake. above is the portal where you ask AI questions about government services. the question matching this image is: "How can I invest in my child's future?"

Things may not be great most places, but having a spot near home where I can do a six mile run and then soak my legs in a cold creek while catching smallmouth bass on a fly rod makes a big difference in being willing/able to deal with the other stuff.
Photo of a thirteen inch long smallmouth bass I caught in the Red Cedar River today

If you ever find yourself starting a sentence with “not all” just stop. Put the phone down. This is your opportunity to not become part of the problem. Say to yourself: this isn’t about me. Go outside. Touch grass. Choose de-escalation.

The ternary diagram for clay content In this paper is pretty cool. I guess kaolinite doesn’t get invited to many parties without much chemical weathering. Hydrolysis without liquid water isn’t easy.

Went to Yellowstone a couple years ago. The hat-to-flip-flop ratio was about 2:1. We met a ranger who was retrieving stuff from the springs, but they asked ppl not to take photos as they thought it would make people feel it was okay to be careless.
A panoramic view of grand prismatic springs showing the brown and orange mud surrounding the steaming pond. On the right side some tourists are on the walkway and there is a red baseball hat lying on the middle near the spring.

Saw this at Ft Wilkins State park in Michigan this summer. No, we didn’t see any bigfoots. Bigfeet? Bigsfoot?
A Bigfoot warning poster I saw in Michigan this summer:

Bigfoot Warning!

Attention campers: due to the increased flow in the Fanny Hooe
Creek, the Bigfoots are coming down from the high country to feed on fish and vegetation at the edge of the creek.
Do not be alarmed if you have an encounter. Remain calm and follow these simple steps to stay safe:
• Do not run from Bigfoot
• Do not chase Bigfoot
• Do not yell at Bigfoot
• Do not feed Bigfoot
• Do go about your business
• Do take pictures
Bigfoot will not enter your campsite.
Bigfoot will not harm you.
Once the encounter is finished, report it to the nearest ranger station.
Please keep note of the location, time, and the direction the Bigfoot is traveling.
park store.
The most recent sightings are between the East Campground and the park store

When your dad teaches soil mechanics, you end up with the coolest sandcastles at the beach.
A freestanding sandcastle tower, about a foot tall and four inches in diameter. Made with sand compacted in a mold and then brick pattern carved into the side.Another tall sandcastle with carved brickwork and drip sand structures growing off it like a tree.

I am still thinking about the math problem posed by Burger King’s “Have-sies” option. The fry to ring ratio based on calories does not appear to match the fry/ring ratio based on cost.
A photo of the sides menu at Burger King. Fries, onion rings, or “Have-sies” are options, but I can’t calculate the fry to ring ratio using both calories and price

So we know AI helped a negligible number of students. But how many did it harm? I've crunched the raw data provided by the lead researcher, and what I've found is that ~9,500 students using AI studied less than even the *least* studious, non-AI using student. This should shock the conscience.

It’s impressive that autonomous AI agents is only the second most unreal idea in this sentence, behind the magic “press to get data” button. Just a huge devaluing of the process of data collection. Science is not just interpretation of data! There’s a reason many scientists want their own lab.
