America has a long history of suppressing workers and propping up the rich. From Hammer and Hoe: Alabama Communists during the Great Depression.

A passage from the book: “Because rent was so inexpensive (about five or six dollars per month in 1930), few workers chose to strike out beyond the company settlement. More importantly, companies generally did not evict workers unable to pay the rent, choosing instead to retrieve the back payments through payroll deduction at a later date.”
