What kills me is that it's no longer Internet randos using AI to cosplay as philosophers, historians or scientists. It's established philosophers, historians and scientists surrendering their hard-won intellectual agency and integrity in a rapid cascade, faster than even my darkest prediction. 1/1

Really glad someone is writing about this! I instantly knew the “National Academy of Artificial Intelligence” was a scam. I’ve also been repeatedly contacted by the “American Society for AI” over the past year, and had to block many people associated with that organization on LinkedIn.

If we look for a moment at Elon Musk, for instance, you can see the harm he's inflicting is not because he has developed super-advanced technologies beyond everyone's wildest dreams, but because he uses the power he has carelessly and believes he can act above the law. That is the danger.

The alarms are all flashing red.
Screenshot of a thread on X by user Jacob Coxon (@hilbertspaess) detailing his resignation from Anthropic.
The first post reads: "I resigned from Anthropic today. I spent the last three years doing pretraining research at both OpenAI and Anthropic. Neither company is acting responsibly. They are racing straight to self-improving superintelligence and gambling with our lives. More thoughts below."
The second post reads: "Do not underestimate the power of this technology. These will soon be superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources. We have all witnessed the progress in each of these domains, and progress is not slowing."
The third post reads: "The people building AI earnestly believe that it could kill us all by the end of the decade. This is not a marketing stunt. If anything, many executives and senior researchers will couch their phrasing in the press to sound sensible - but I hear the same people express fear privately. No other human activity poses this level of danger."Screenshot continuing the thread on X by Jacob Coxon (@hilbertspaess).
The first post reads: "A common response is 'if they truly believe this, why are they still building it?' At OpenAI, many have not deeply internalized the civilizational stakes. At Anthropic, the stakes are well-understood, but they are locked in a race to get there first - they believe no one else will act responsibly, so they must do it themselves, despite the risk."
The second post reads: "Accepting this race and entering the 'endgame' is a hubristic gamble that should not be launched from a private company's Slack. Attempting to speedrun alignment should require extraordinary confidence that there are no better trajectories available."
The third post reads: "I am optimistic about the potential for coordination. Warning shots like the Hugging Face attack have made pacing agreements between U.S. labs more viable. I don’t feel like we’re on track to prevent a global race, which may require costly actions such as a temporary ban on improving model capabilities."
The fourth post reads: "If you are a lab researcher, I urge you to consider what the next few years will actually feel like. Do you want to kick off a superintelligent RL run without a rigorous understanding of its mind? Should you put your head down because 'it’s happening anyway' - or take this moment to call for different conditions?"

I'm perplexed. This year, we've watched multiple Black authors lose book deals, face scrutiny, and endure reputational damage because of AI accusations. And now this tragedy. The question is, are we going to sit back and allow scientific racism to be resurrected and returned to the mainstream?

The man who had “concerns” about Arday is a discredited eugenicist. Funny how every single news outlet is leaving this out. A human being is dead as a result of a weeklong campaign of media harassment fed by right wingers looking to get a cheap shot in on a disabled Black man.

You gotta hand it to OpenAI, billing this as a *partnership* between OpenAI & Hugging Face when what actually happened was Hugging Face finding out that OpenAI was using a bunch of bots to exploit security vulnerabilities. Talk about good marketing or whatever you want to call it, by OpenAI.
