We urgently need to speak back to the anti-trans EHRC guidance and stand firm for the rights of trans people in the arts. I'm running two in person sessions at Barbican on Oct 22nd, and two online - Nov 10th & 16th - listening, gathering data, creating a joint Call to Action - will you come?

We did not escape without a couple of books, a wooden postcard, a set of pin badges and plans for our relatives' Christmas and birthday presents!

🥰 do look at the online gallery - it is very well done, even if it can't match the physical experience

Evidence suggests that the artists were inspired by illuminated manuscripts kept at Canterbury, such as the Gospel of St Augustine. So much religious art was destroyed in the English Reformation that we'll never know whether there were other works that were in conversation with the Tapestry

There's something so moving and disturbing about this: the moment when everything changes, captured by a woman who was grieving, maybe angry and despairing. Marking a moment when a man's life ended and life as she knew it ended, and the horror of war was fully and terribly unleashed.
2933
Kat Gupta @mixosaurus.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
And then there's panel 52. The exact moment of the shift from life before the war to everything that will come next. The first man falls, crumpling to the ground. Below him, mirroring the angle of his body, one of the last creatures falls with him. I couldn't stop looking at it, thinking about it.
A close-up image from the Bayeux Tapestry. In the main storyline, a man in chainmail falls backwards, his chest pierced by a spear. He is being trampled by galloping horses. In the border below him, a winged creature falls backwards as if also hit by something and injured.

Kat Gupta @mixosaurus.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
During the battle, the borders are full of dying and dead men. Men falling to the ground, men decapitated and limbs torn apart. Shattered swords and shields bristling with arrows. Men being stripped of their mail armour and lying naked and broken. It is ugliness created through beautiful embroidery.

I found myself drawn to the border images. At first, they are gentle. There are scenes of everyday life: people herding cattle, hunting ducks, ploughing the fields. There are birds and fabulous beasts stretching their wings and chasing their tails. There are fish and eels swirling below the water.

It's a document of life and trauma and war. It was stitched by women who had almost certainly lost fathers, uncles, brothers, husbands and sons to the brutal Norman war and subsequent harrying of the North. They almost certainly had witnessed and experienced horrors themselves.

Kat Gupta @mixosaurus.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
I saw the Bayeux Tapestry today. Despite the somewhat rushed experience, it is truly awe-inspiring to stand before something so old, each stitch placed by the skilled women embroiderers of a conquered people, and preserved and cared for by generations. It's astonishing that it still exists at all.

All of this is from the executive summary. If you read the full report the foreword will give you more valuable context to the way this review has been done. From that: "young people today are contending with more powerful forces than I ever faced. They are not fragile. They are outnumbered."

I feel this about my nephew. He's gentle and loving and gives the biggest, most enthusiastic hugs. I hate that this world will see him as a violent predator or, worse, teach him to be so.

If you would like something in your house that yearns for blood, may I suggest a hormonal parrot who is FURIOUS that you won't let her nest under her cage and wishes to express her displeasure by chasing feet?

Ours was also strictly for teacher use only! The teachers seemed to enjoy using it so maybe I will also fall passionately in love with a machine that could take my hand off if I look at it funny

So I was idly thinking that, if I ever get space, it would be nice to get a bandsaw and a pillar drill so I could make toys for our parrots. Then I thought about the absolute Fear of the bandsaw that school DT lessons instilled in me and it's just wild that I could just buy one, no questions asked

And further to this, there are ways to be accompanied (not represented) even if they say no: - English not your first language? Bring an interpreter just in case. - Feeling very stressed? Bring someone to support your 'wellbeing'. - Declared disability? A reasonable adjustment can be a note taker.

Delighted to be working with TransActual on this! We know that responding to this consultation was painful for many trans people and our supporters. We'd like to use these responses to find out more about our community's thoughts and experiences. Please read the info and contact me if you have qus

friends fear they've taken up another expensive hobby
About 20cm of garter stitch knitting still on a pair of circular needles. The knitting is actually fairly neat and regular with no dropped or extra stitches. The yarn is variegated with patches of dark blue, teal, peach and pink.

Did you enjoy using your NHS complex lenses voucher? I honestly think it costs more to issue and process the voucher than the actual value of the voucher.

Goodnight sweet prince, and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest! (yes I have a spare pair, yes I am about to drop £500+ on lenses alone because my eyesight is fucked, no I can't order cheap lenses online because my lenses are very high powered & need a human to line up the lens with my pupil)
A pair of dramatically broken glasses. They have broken at the nose bridge. I have placed them lying flat and with one half above the other half.

The way AI is going to “kill everyone” is just by manufacturing consent for ever worse outcomes & conditions, like many governments do. It is a governing technology after all. And like bureaucracy it launders responsibility so the people & institutions who deploy it aren’t accountable for the harms

Cancelling all transition-related surgery - with no scrutiny, no records, no democratic oversight, no nothing - just a mandate from heaven to crush trans people's rights.

I urge universities to develop and share their plans for when this happens, prioritising the wellbeing of those being piled upon. If you want our public labour and our public visibility, we want your public (legal, wellbeing, media, etc) support.
020
Kat Gupta @mixosaurus.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
In conversation w/ minority scholars over the past days, we have asked ourselves what our university would do if the media storm comes for us. Would it even know where to begin? Would it make us do even more labour by asking us what action we require? Would it make backlash an impact case study?

Kat Gupta @mixosaurus.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
As we have seen in the past month, there is a tragic human cost to chasing visibility at the cost of all else. Universities seek to benefit from their employees' public work but are so adverse to reputational damage that they will abandon academics if something negative happens - w/ chilling effect

Kat Gupta @mixosaurus.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
I've refused media invitations from high profile outlets before. They wanted me to represent the Trans Side and argue for our rights against another guest who believes that trans people should have none. Yes, it's publicity - does it help me? is my workplace prepared to support me in the aftermath?

Arday's story doesn't quite stack up. But no one deserves a public trial so horrific. And now a man is dead and his family, friends and colleagues are grieving. I grieve too - for the man, for the cruelty we witnessed, and for the minority scholars left shaken and scared that theyll be next 12/

Minority scholars shouldn't be placed in this position. I yearn for the day when minority scholars can fuck up without the weight of Excellence around our necks & without being held up as everything wrong with diversity, EDI, wokeness (in the racist sense, not in the consciousness-raising sense) 11/

And what happens when we inevitably cannot live up to impossible standards? When one is placed on a pedestal, the only way is down. One person should never have had that impossible burden placed upon them 10/

Cambridge might be doing work to address myriad issues about recruitment and retention of minority scholars. But they appointed one man, and used his appointment to make claims about how they were a diverse institution without necessarily putting in the work to support minority scholars 9/
