🎉 Cover Reveal Day! 🥳 So jazzed to show off the cover of RESOLUTE DEATH, my academic mystery novel debuting on 28 October! Preorder info here (plus bonus audio narration of the opening Prelude): jajablonski.com/books/ (Book description in alt-text.) #AcademicMystery #CollegeMystery #CollegeCrime

Front and back cover of Resolute Death by J.A. Jablonski. Original art: Stephen Richards. Front is a presentation. Against an all-white background, is a large black raven in flight. All-caps, dark red title is set midway on the cover. Text below in a small, black serif font reads "An Osley College Novel." Below that, in a dark red font matching the title is the author's name.

The back cover shows more of Richards' design: black and grey, ink-wash drawings of tree trunks against a white background. Superimposed is the book description/blurb: a roughly, dark-red outlined box enclosing the book's description:

"Resolute Death offers an intense, immersive tale with masterful plotting. An essential read for those who love an intricately woven mystery that highlights loss, memory, retribution, and found family.

When a glamorous music professor is found dead in the carillon tower of Osley College, a small liberal arts college in the Driftless Region of western Wisconsin, Maude Ascham, the new chief of campus police, has her hands full. Her investigation leads to porn-watching students, an angry boyfriend, a betrayed lover, and feuding colleagues. Students, faculty, and staff: all are implicated. When the Dean of Libraries commits a gruesome suicide three weeks later, the investigation becomes more than a matter of murder.

Who is blackmailing James North, the bereaved, ex-hobo English professor and celebrated poet? Why would someone destroy the 175-year-old bonsai of the cantankerous college gardener? Was last December’s drowning of a senior music student really an accident? And what of Ariel Ellis, the eccentric, blue-haired barista, who is clearly hiding something behind their theatrical banter; and Esha Larkin, the maps librarian seen weeping on the old library’s roof at dawn? Each appears to hold a vital piece of a dangerous puzzle. There is a killer on campus . . . can they be stopped?"

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...

“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

“College campuses can be kind of funny about their trees.” (AHA) Osley College, the setting of my #AcademicMystery, RESOLUTE DEATH is no different. Auspicious then that my cover artist, UK artist, Stephen Richards, finds them rather fascinating as well. #CollegeMystery #CampusCrime #CollegeCrime

Share the last photo of the sky from your camera roll. Out an upstairs window, looking east in the morning a few days back.

Morning sky over the silhouette of neighboring housetops and trees. A cluster of wispy clouds, grey and brilliantly lit beneath with rich, deep nuances of apricot. Overlaying the sky and clouds is a cross-cross of electrical wires and one stalwart telephone pole. Wires and pokes are also in silhouette.

On the left, she appears in a close-up photo with long, dark braided hair, wearing earrings, a delicate necklace with a pendant, a deep maroon sweater, and a shimmering green scarf draped around her neck. She has a calm, confident expression and gazes directly at the camera against a softly blurred dark background. To the right are three stacked book covers of her works. Top: The Fifth Season (The Broken Earth trilogy), with a dark, textured design and metallic title. Middle: The Obelisk Gate, featuring an intricate, glowing red-and-purple circular mandala-like emblem. Bottom: The Stone Sky, showing a dramatic stormy sky with a massive floating obelisk.

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.
