Mars Destroying the Arts — Michael Sweerts, ca 1651
The God of War painted as a 17th century Soldier with a sword in his hand. He is doing what such soldiers so often do: he's looking down with contempt as he steps on a broken White marble statue.
on the ground around the fallen sculpture are books, and a violin and sheet music and other tokens of the gentle Arts of civilization

The graded shading that radiates outwards from the hip has created the impression of a firework launched into the night sky in a starburst of silver. You can almost hear the crackle of the sparks as they fade. Early #1920s #PalaisGalliera #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
A flapper style 1920s evening dress of black chiffon decorated almost entirely with silver beadwork in a firework design. It centres over one hip and then burst outwards in shaded silver lines

Olga 'the Headless Girl' was a sideshow illusion act, not a real person without a head, using staging to create the effect for audiences in early 20th-century freak shows.

The performer portraying Olga would wear a mask (sometimes described as a crown) of mirrors that reflected an interior series of wires. The illusion was very convincing and remained popular in sideshows for decades, debuting in the United States in 1937 and the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Other names like Tina and Mademoiselle Yvette were also used (instead of Olga).

The story that usually accompanied these acts involves a young woman who had tragically lost her head during a horrifying accident, but through the marvels of science and a talented doctor was able to be kept alive despite the loss of her head.

Decapitated Ball Player with Seven Serpents Sprouting from the Neck carved stone relief c. 400-700 CE Classic Veracruz culture Aparicio, Veracruz, Mexico #handmade #carved #stone #relief #Mesoamerica #MesoamericanBallgame #Aparicio #Veracruz #Veracruzculture #decapitatedplayer #sevensnakes #symbol
The Aparicio site was built by the Classic Veracruz culture (sometimes called the Gulf Coast culture).
This civilization flourished in the modern-day Mexican state of Veracruz during the Mesoamerican Classic period, roughly between about 400 to 700 CE.
This civilization was intensely focused on the Mesoamerican ballgame. Their largest and most famous urban center was El Tajín, located further north of Aparicio, which boasts at least 18 individual ballcourts.
Aparicio is an archaeological site located in the municipality of Vega de Alatorre in Veracruz, Mexico.
The site is famous for its well-preserved, relief-carved stone plaques (ballcourt panels) depicting ball players.
These famous carvings frequently depict a decapitated ball player with seven serpents sprouting from their neck, symbolizing fertility and ritual sacrifice associated with the game.

How would you describe your social media reach?
A picture, nicked from the Bill Hicks album version of his show / tour titled Relentless, the cassette release on the Laughing Stock label. In this black-and-white photo, we see Bill behind a microphone stand, his head slightly tilted, looking out into a desert, holding a cigarette in his right hand .. a lonely voice, speaking into the void ... no offense to anyone who follows me — "I love You, and You know it," to quote the Bodhisattva himself.

Carole Lombard and Shirley Temple between takes on the set of Now and Forever (1934)
Actresses Carole Lombard and Shirley Temple — both in costume, Lombard in a light-coloured long-sleeved gown with billowing sleeves and ornate button detail, six-year-old Temple in a dark-coloured, short-sleeved dress with white Peter Pan collar — captured together, Lombard in profile while seated at a piano, her hands on its keys, looking up at Temple, who perches on top of the instrument and gazes at Lombard, both smiling, in a medium-length black-and-white shot taken on a soundstage during a break from filming on the set of Now and Forever (1934)
