I love this concept for a folio: unpublished poems you removed from your forthcoming book. For me, that was "All Night I Stare at the TV Screen." I wrote it after weeks watching & reading about 'Jennifer Fairgate' & the strange phenomenon of fixating on the deaths of strangers.

Thanks to @manahil.bsky.social for asking me to contribute to this fun folio, made up of poems that didn’t quite make it into recent collections. My poem, “Puppy Sounds,” is a haibun-ish thing that is part of a suite of poems I wrote when my dog, Mugcake, was a puppy.

#SealeyChallenge 2026 Day 11/31: double feature of a couple of above/ground chapbooks, "Where the Bear Was" from Biodôme by Stephanie Bolster, and "Golden Lion Tamarin" from Biodôme: A Bestiary after Stephanie Bolster by Misha Solomon
Where the Bear Was

is a garden, a cavern, cordoned off,
ferns raised in shade.
The bars that held
the bear, held back the clamour up above, remain.
During the occupation a Nazi soldier
dropped his helmet in and the bear, bored, sported it awhile,
was ordered killed, the cavern closed.
A patch of shine its forehead rubbed
across the bars. Nearby, a statue of a bear,
its nearest, sweetest places polished gold
by children. To the left,
a bear saunters, circling
the pool, ducks as it passes the spray,
looks up, shakes its head, moves on. Chestnut blooms
fall among the ivy and the ferns.
Once this was not even Paris.Cover of Biodôme by Stephanie BolsterGolden Lion Tamarin

Even the briefest distance is divisible
by the degrees of impending closeness as I
span the space between us. I am the husband of
her life and I would forever raise our children,
run my fingers through her golden mane, sleep soundly
in the holes we find in trees. Here's a game we like:
I shriek to find her in a crowd, though I know she’s
just a branch below. I chirp to warn her danger
comes, but it’s the same danger that does us no harm.
I’ve never wanted anyone but her, but thought
each day I’d get the chance to choose her once again.
My love is undiminished by the lack of choice—
still, while noting that her leftmost digit made that
divot, I sense choice could have made my feelings grow.Cover of Biodôme: A Bestiary after Stephanie Bolster by Misha Solomon

An excerpt from Misha Solomon's interview for occasionalpoems.ca, on an orange-red gradient background. "What is the occasion of your poem?

My best friend’s wedding!

How did the occasion of your poem shape the form that your poem took?

At the wedding, I read ‘Having a Coke with You’ by Frank O’Hara, as part of a creative take on the Seven Blessings ritual at Jewish weddings. My occasional poem is about that experience, drawing on some elements of form and language from the O’Hara poem itself."Bio page for Misha Solomon: "Misha Solomon is a homosexual poet in and of Tiohtià:ke/Montréal. He is the author of the full-length collection My Great-Grandfather Danced Ballet (Brick Books, 2026) and of two chapbooks: FLORALS (above/ground press, 2020) and Full Sentences (Turret House Press, 2022). His work has appeared in Best Canadian Poetry, Arc Poetry Magazine, Geist, The Malahat Review, Maisonneuve, and The New Quarterly.
