Just occurred to me to look at the Toronto Maple Leafs' website to see what became of their Yasiel Puig adventure (you heard me) and this was about the most confusing headline I have ever seen
Website headline reading "MULTI-HOMER GAME FROM DEI BANING POWERS LEAFS TO COMEBACK VICTORY", with a picture of a baseball player about to throw a baseball in the background

Anaximander: From that which things have their genesis they also have the generation of their decay as they owe. For they must do justice to each other for their injustice by the order of time. A poem of mine that appeared in @arcpoetry.bsky.social in 2024:
Autumn Equinox, Ontario

For a split second the tops of our heads
face the centre of space. We try to stand
our eggs on end. Time cracks us up again.

The barometric pressure bottoms out
and we are changed, our great steaming bodies
of water streaming away from themselves.

Today the atmosphere adheres strictly
to the calendar. A child calculates:
the cosmos carries on necessarily

in accordance with absolute justice.
We've taken its measure precisely.
Each and every thing comes just as it's called.

Colorado Rockies x ERA under 3.00 in today's Remembering Some Guys game is just mean (the guy I guessed missed by 0.07) but it did send me off down rabbit holes that led to my learning that the last hit Bob Gibson gave up in his major league career was a grand slam by Ralph Pierre "Pete" LaCock, Jr.

#SealeyChallenge Day 1/31! Kicking off this year with SPECTACLE/SPECTATOR by Noah Sparrow, from @robmclennan.bsky.social 's above/ground press As last year I'll post my more-or-less favourite poem or excerpt from each day's book without commentary So here's "No Science in the Grocery Store"
No Science in the Grocery Store

I used to have a recurring nightmare.
At age five, I'd stand across the aisle
from an old lady, never taller than myself.
She would beat me with her purse
in the grocery store and tell me
it's what I deserved. After all, this is
what happens when you are bad, somehow

I'd wake in my own bed, my eyes
shaded by a purple room. A colour
I didn't like nor mind but it was real,
and the woman was never real
and I was real enough,
if only differently conscious.
I decided to undergo a forfeiting
of the dream-world,
instead trying to conquer every
single shadow in the living room

There were too many heads to count.
At that age, I could barely keep counting
yet I had the periodic table memorized
because my father used to be a scientist
Maybe he still is one, like how we've
always been, and always will be, Irish.
Maybe he isn't a scientist anymore,
I don't know how far the word goes.

When he was my age, the one I'm at now, he built a laser and shot it into space.
I don't know what he wanted to hit, or if
there was a target in mind. When I was
seven, a girl asked me if I thought I was strong.
I said yes, and to check, I punched her in the nose.I thought I was incapable of harming anybody
because I thought I was forgettable, like an
old dream where everything goes mostly right,
and you wake up, you're smaller than before,
and there's more milk to drink.
Her tears wrote up a consensus:
sometimes the motion itself can be enough.

With every paper-cut, there's always
a little bit of mourning left over,
hidden in the drain of a bathroom sink,
a band-aid in the garbage.

This was inside you and
you will never see it again.
Everyone around you has been
aging this entire time, they
just forgot to let you know.

My father made good money from
a photo of Halley's Comet. It made
an appearance in the local paper.
It's hanging on the wall but in a way
I've never really seen it:

The paper grew into yellow
before I got here. The cover of SPECTACLE/SPECTATOR by Noah Sparrow

Swear to God I had not read this when I posted that
Screenshot of a bluesky post by Emily Wilson reading: "1. It's a fun action movie. A line that got cut but sums up some of my overall feelings: This Odyssey is not a rich, satisfying Homeric banquet, but sometimes in the heat, an ice-cold Philly water ice is all you want - even it's mostly sugar and food coloring, and makes no nutritional sense."

Just ate some peanut butter & remembered on TV for 5 year olds when I was 5 what a big concern getting your mouth stuck together with peanut butter was, if you didn't have a glass of milk ready when you ate peanut butter you were probably going to get your mouth stuck together Is this still a thing
