Today in class, I heard myself compare a particular poem’s movement to the tiki-taka style of soccer (an unhinged overreach). Tried to save face by turning the moment into a lesson on metaphor as an act of inquiry, which I think is from Mark Doty. Unclear this worked. 🤣🫣🤷🏻‍♀️⚽️

you hear the word loaded / and a sensory constellation / is lit The Thomas Lux poem I keep coming back to
THE VOICE YOU HEAR WHEN YOU READ SILENTLY

is not silent, it is a speaking-
out-loud voice in your head: it is spoken,
a voice is saying it
as you read. It's the writer's words,
of course, in a literary sense
his or her "voice" but the sound
of that voice is the sound of your voice.
Not the sound your friends know
or the sound of a tape played back
but your voice
caught in the dark cathedral
of your skull, your voice heard.
by an internal ear informed by internal abstracts
and what you know by feeling,
having felt. It is your voice.
saying, for example, the word "barn"
that the writer wrote
but the "barn" you say
is a barn you know or knew. The voice
in your head, speaking as you read,
never says anything neutrally--some people
hated the barn they knew,
some people love the barn they know
so you hear the word loaded
and a sensory constellation
is lit: horse-gnawed stalls,
hayloft, black heat tape wrapping
a water pipe, a slippery
spilled chirrr of oats from a split sack,
the bony, filthy haunches of cows...
And "barn" is only a noun--no verb
or subject has entered into the sentence yet!
The voice you hear when you read to yourself
is the clearest voice: you speak it
speaking to you.

                                                  --THOMAS LUX

Just taped for the BBC on this fascinating set of observations in humpback whales. I argued that yes we should strongly consider maternal love + grief here, based on what the researchers report--and on what we know abt animals' emotions. #whales #cetaceans #grief #animalgrief #deathstudies #nature

The behaviours we observed could represent grief, but they could also reflect maternal attachment, confusion or instinctive caregiving

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

Something my mother taught me that's been incredibly helpful. When you're not feeling social and you have to meet new people, smile and say hello and shake their hand. then, turn and notice something on the ground and pretend you're stomping on a cockroach with a really thick shell. 👠🪳

Great piece that locates and relocates ballet in a contemporary context: “…dance doesn’t hide: much of our lives is lived instinctually rather than rationally, however much we try to pretend otherwise. Dance not only makes emotion visible but also elevates it past its origin.”

Something I think about a LOT as an editor is not erasing or editing out what makes the author unique. Smoothing their edges. Normalizing. Conforming. Asking questions? rather than telling.

Kim Addonizio, with a tour de force foray into form
Prosody Pathétique

Trochees tear your heart to tatters.
Lovers leave you broken, battered.
Fuck you, fuck off: spondees. So what.
Get high. Drop dead. Who cares. Life sucks.
Dactyls are you getting boozed in your underwear,
thinking of someone who used to be there.
These are iambs: Dolor. Despair.
And going on and on about your pain,
and sleeping pills, and dark and heavy rain.
Now for the anapests: in the end, you're alone.
In the bag, in the dark; in a terrible rut.
With a smirk, in a wink, the wolves tear you apart.

I appreciate that Dolly Parton refused to participate in "dress respectability" and, by her own account, modeled her aesthetic after a town "tramp," who she thought was beautiful. She separated aesthetics from character and understood "classiness" to be about how you treat people, not how you dress.

I adore you sinkingly Another poem by Kim Addonizio
Crossing

I stash my heart in my boot.
I've got a broken knife for you. You're not dying for love,
you're not even injured. Not a scratch, not a nick,
no throb in the bones, no slight headache
starting behind the eyes.
I'm walking on a dead ocean
all the fish in my body in free fall. I adore you sinkingly.
You're what. You're whom.
In every room. A dog starts racketing: it's you. Siren
ratcheting off the blue.
I tie myself to the table.
I bolt myself to the bed.
When the phone's black call comes I light another silence in my head.
