Slide 4: The data is sobering. But the news is not all bad. In fact, in Texas, one of the states with the highest number of book bans, a recent poll found that 90% of Texans believe public libraries should be treated as an essential service. (A graphic of the state of Texas shows a book with hearts coming out of it.) Data from a statewide opinion poll by KRC Research on behalf of the Texas Library Association.

Slide 5: Authors and librarians need YOU. Even just one person speaking up in support of a book or an author can sway opinion at a school board meeting. Book banners win when the rest of us are silent. Don't stay silent. This Banned Books Week, make plans to call your reps, keep track of book-banning attempts in your community, and research the candidates for your local school board elections. Together, we can make a difference.

Neiman Marcus closed its downtown Dallas flagship on Wednesday. The store played a notable role in the history of desegregation in Dallas. Previously, Black shoppers across the US could enter department stores, but they weren't allowed to try on clothes without adhering to certain conditions. 🧵

I know there is a hell of a lot going on right now. But not all of it is bad. Some is astonishingly good - like the results of this study from June. Cervical cancer is a terribly cruel thing. This might, at long last, be the beginning of the end of it. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

The image is of a four panel comic.
The title is “Cats living together”.
The first panel shows a black cat and orange cat cuddling with their eyes closed. The orange cat says “I love you”. The black cat says “I love you too”.
The second panel zooms in on them.
The third panel shows the orange cat opening its eyes.
The fourth panel shows the orange cat raising its paw to punch the black cat. It says, “Actually you know what”.

It's great to see tailoring accommodate such extreme movement today. This level of tailoring was a bit more common in the past, as you can see in old films featuring Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly, but many modern suits will lift off the wearer's neck even when they're just walking.

Japanese writer Jirō Osaragi (大佛次郎) and his cat, Japan,1930s.
Seated upon a woven cushion beside a sliding wooden frame, acclaimed writer Jirō Osaragi cradles a pristine white cat against his lap, his hands holding the animal with gentle, practiced ease. Draped in the soft, cascading folds of a dark traditional kimono, Osaragi turns his face toward the lens with a quiet, engaging gaze. The stark white fur of the feline creates a vivid focal point at the center of the frame, catching soft directional light that illuminates its watchful eyes and slender ears. Behind them, the subtle grid of a shōji screen and the deep gloom of a tatami room frame the pair, establishing an intimate domestic stillness captured in warm monochrome tones.
Photographed in the 1930s, this portrait captures Jirō Osaragi (1897–1973), one of early Shōwa-period Japan's most prominent literary figures, famous for his historical adventure novels such as Kurama Tengu as well as modern postwar reflections like Homecoming (Kikyō). Osaragi was celebrated not only for his prolific pen but also for his lifelong passion for felines, often sharing his home in historic Kamakura with dozens of rescue cats at a time, famously remarking that his feline companions provided an essential emotional anchor throughout his writing career. In 1930s Japanese literary culture, informal portraits of writers (bunjin) in their home studies served as a beloved subgenre of documentary photography, combining modern media craftsmanship with the timeless monozukuri (artisanal mastery) of portrait arts to reveal the human interiority behind celebrated literature.

One of the things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, every time. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is the signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly becomes lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes.

Something worth stressing in the Sheeran situation is how all of the artists bowing out have made a point of comparing and contrasting their prior positive feelings about working with Ed Sheeran with their choice to leave the tour. It reflects that even if Sheeran won't admit fault, they see it.

IMO, the solution should not be to browbeat people into an old standard, but rather allow people to wear whatever they want. If someone can wear ducky pajamas in public, you can wear tailoring in any cut, color, and material. As options open up, dress can then be a source of pleasure.

It's very easy to wear a suit and tie in any major city, even if the aesthetic has mostly disappeared from daily life, because there are people outside wearing pink tutus with Army boots. As usual, your liberation is connected to other people's liberation.
Bobby Mars on Twitter writes: "If you wear a collared shirt and nice shoes out to the bar in the rust belt, multiple people will ask you if you just came from a wedding. Aesthetic standards for men’s attire are horrendously low"
