this is the tradeoff we make: we (oss devs) contribute to projects, attach the most *absolutely giveaway* licensing possible, so companies would be *idiots* to not take that code up and use it (as long as it's not crap!), and in exchange, *we* can use it at _any job we go to_.

We should have like a really big nuclear reactor that makes energy everyone can harvest, but put it a safe distance from the earth. Uh I'm being informed it's not a safe distance from the earth and you'll need to put on this lotion to prevent radiation burns.

Not sure if this is a hot take, but the apparently frequent cheating or borderline cheating with Ai in University seems to me less about Ai and more about how sick the system has gotten. Compare for example to learning from a teacher to graft trees. In that case, cheating would be absurd. Why?

I love universities. But the incentive structure is badly fucked up. Anyone who teaches has had the experience of teaching a class they don't want to teach to a room of students who don't want to learn. Like with a lot of things Ai is an accelerant, but it didn't create the problem.

Z3! You're on WATCH! Latest update to lean.py is a drop in replacement for Z3! Everyone's trying to put SMT solvers in their theorem prover, how about putting a theorem prover in your SMT solver? and here's the crazy thing: One click install, if you know Z3, you KNOW lean.py. You are not ready.
A Z3-like reasoning API for Python, backed by Lean 4

Lean 4 is a general-purpose symbolic reasoning engine. Its tactic library covers linear arithmetic (omega), congruence closure with E-matching (grind), propositional decidability (decide), and rewriting (simp), and the system is designed to be extended with new sorts, constructors, and decision procedures. Every proof is independently checked by a small trusted kernel, so the Python side never needs to trust the automation; it trusts the checker. The overhead of learning Lean’s type theory and build system has kept most of this machinery out of reach for Python programmers.

lean_py.z3 wraps Lean’s tactic engine in the z3py API. Propositions are written in the familiar Int, Bool, Function, ForAll vocabulary. Under the hood, each expression compiles to a Lean 4 term, gets dispatched to the tactic engine, and the resulting proof is kernel-checked.

uv pip install "lean_py @ git+https://github.com/BasisResearch/lean.py"

You need elan so that lean is on your PATH. Then open Python.

from lean_py.z3 import *

x, y = Ints('x y')
prove(Implies(And(x > 0, y > 0), x + y > 0))
# proved

On the first run the library builds and caches a managed Lake project under ~/.lean_py/managed/, which takes a minute or two. Every subsequent run picks up the cache and starts instantly.

Everyone says they want Fully Automated Luxury Gay Space Communism until they learn the Communism will be endless amounts of charts, the Space stuff will be done mostly by robots, the Full Automation will come from AI, and the Gay part will also involve AI making up for the top shortage.

Those claiming that data centers will heat up cities multiple degrees are as wrong as they were when they claimed a prompt for a 100 word email vaporizes a cup of water within a minute. More importantly, they don't actually care about either. They just went insane when computers started writing.

Your median tech CEO is some combination of sociopath and narcissist, but also there is a subset of the population that just kind of checked out at GPT3 and has refused to even engage with the tech since like 2023. They are, coincidentally, probably the most at-risk of being displaced by said tech.

For context global primary power consumption in 2024 was estimated to be 176,737 TWh, or equivalently ~20.18 TW continuously for a year. It would take 2 thousand 10 GW power plants to equal this. ourworldindata.org/energy-produ...

Oh data center power consumption claims - my favorite! Here's an article from 2013 on radiative forcing due to climate change. The number at the time was 2.5*10^14 Joules per second, or 250 TW. Which would be 25k 10GW power plants. skepticalscience.com/4-Hiroshima-...

For context, 9GW is roughly equivalent to a scenario where everyone in New York City turns on their hair dryer at the same time. - it could warm up a lot of bathrooms or very small apartments - the volume of these is minuscule relative to the atmosphere and will not measurably effect the weather

the most midwit take on earth is that there must secretly be some quantity of, like, molybdenum or carbon emissions associated with every quantum of money which moves. gdp growth really doesn't mean anything because most things do not have naturally associated physical costs.

Maybe a sufficiently smart local model could turn a whole OS into a sort of a self-modifying predatory shoggoth, that decompiles and reverse engineers anything you point it at. How to prevent that thing from draining your bank account and then bricking itself is left as an exercise to the reader.
