Since the mid-1950s, we have changed the thing that "AI" refers to every 5-10 years. The current thing we're calling "AI" is about a decade old, and all this label-switching leads to a lack of clarity as to what (this) "AI" is.

bizarre how much political journalism is telling the public x party are popular, why not vote for them or x party aren't doing well, you shouldn't vote for them. huge amount of people who vote but aren't hugely 'political' seem to treat elections as a predict the winner exercise

The post-war "peace dividend" owed its existence to three factors: industrial capacity, political freedom and pent-up demand.
The Earth from space; it is covered in scaffolding that is crawling with little rude mechanicals ganked from 17th century engravings of people operating machines.

As individuals, probably the best thing we could do for our own food security, water quality and the environment in general is massively reduce our consumption of meat and dairy. Any government serious about addressing these issues should be saying so and designing farming payments to suit.

But this is only one part of multiple overlapping existential threats to the country and our way of life and all need urgently addressed. We absolutely cannot let a prospective government undermine democracy by essentially bribing the electorate to compromise on one or another to keep out the right.

But even then, the economic and political benefits are short-term and massively outweighed by the damage climate change will do, so the conclusion is pretty simple - such a government either lacks competence or prioritises political wins over the long term health of the country.

I see this and Rosebank as being pretty basic tests of whether a political party or government are serious about tackling climate change. Refusing both would cost nothing electorally so the rationale for giving the green light could only be to send a 'signal' to economic interests.

Today’s right-wing rarely cares for carless cities & pollution control. But in 1967, an enthusiastic Weekend (Daily) Telegraph magazine hired architect William Whitfield to plan a new site for the Houses Of Parliament in Windsor. The London it left behind would be a kind of vehicle-free playground.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”
