Just because you say "how do we talk about this without stigmatizing" a few grafs down does not at all mean you are writing about this "the right way."

The number one rule of normie media is "never learn anything." Gee, I wonder if stigmatizing Somali kids will work out better than stigmatizing Hmong kids, Latino kids, Black kids, etc.? If only we have some prior experience with this sort of thing!

Strib headline: "A new kind of gang violence is rattling Twin Cities suburbs" Subhed: "Police say loosely organized gangs of Somali American youths are settling online disputes with gunfire, alarming residents and community leaders."

I have been collecting the results after it's all done, but now that I am moving that to a Lambda, I'm in danger of hitting the 15-minute time limit just to get the results of the boto list_objects_v2 paginator for a few million records. And that makes me sad.

If you're running batches of Step Functions at ~50-100 transactions per second, and want to log the results into (eventually) a single data store (db, ndjson, csv, whatever) to the tune of about 5 million final records, what would your pipeline look like? Is Amazon Kinesis Data Firehose right?

last night eyewitnesses saw Oscar Belgal — the man shot by ICE with his 5 year old in the car — discharged from the hospital into ICE custody, with feds speeding off as NYPD cleared the roads for them of protesters. his attorneys don't know where he is; he's seemingly been taken out of NY state.

Did Anthropic's Claude discover something new in biotech? Well, just like with those recent alleged math proofs, it looks like it was given the answers in advance from real humans doing actual research. (gift: www.nytimes.com/2026/09/27/s...)
Dr. Mestre and his colleagues have yet to publish their findings. But for the past three years, they have regularly used Anthropic’s A.I. models as they have written code, drafted manuscripts and performed other tasks.

In doing so, Dr. Mestre said he and colleagues shared key findings about the enzymes with Anthropic.Anthropic said that Claude’s key contribution was identifying an array of RNA molecules and a protein associated with reverse transcriptase in a system. But Dr. Mestre said that he and his colleagues had made that discovery over a year ago.

And part of what I mean is that I am not the one to speak on it! Definitely outside my expertise. And it's going to be so important that researchers who engage with this data do so with a lot of context.

Washington DC's racial demographic history is complicated, so the story of the creation of these covenants and their legacies today are also not simple. There is so much in this dataset for researchers to dive into.

Big big Mapping Prejudice data update today: We have updated our Washington DC racial covenants data to include 20,000+ covenants that were previously identified by our collaborators at Mapping Segregation DC. The combined DC dataset is now at 27,600 covenanted parcels (and counting!).
A map of racial covenants in Washington DC. Covenants, marked as green polygons, cover wide swaths of the District outside the central city, most densely to the north and northeast. Other large patches are present in the southwest and southeast portions of the district.

If folks in the Democratic party cannot find it within themselves to be absolute staunch supporters of trans people's rights because trans people are people who have inherent worth, then they should at least do it because if we give up on trans people, then we're literally giving up on democracy.

Incredible. First Secretary Mullin claimed that DHS had identified 15,903 noncitizens on Nevada’s voter roll. Then DHS officials told a skeptical Nevada, no no no, that’s just people we flagged. Here are the names of 185 people we KNOW aren’t citizens. All 185 were citizens. DHS got 100% wrong.
When the Department of Homeland Security sent Nevada a list of 185 names last month that it claimed identified noncitizens who had been improperly allowed to register to vote, state election officials got to work.
On Tuesday, the state sent a strongly worded rebuke to the federal government: Every single person on the list was a lawful citizen.
"As for the 185 individuals, our records indicate that they were citizens," Greg D. Ott, a deputy attorney general in Nevada, wrote, according to a copy of a letter sent to Department of Homeland Security officials obtained through open records requests.
"You have provided nothing of substance to suggest otherwise."Following the meeting, Ms. Vogt sent a clarifying email to Nevada officials. "I also wanted to be sure I clarified that we did not reduce the 15,903 to 185," she wrote. "We've manually reviewed some of the 15,903 and confirmed 185 are not U.S. Citizens."
Now, Nevada officials are saying even that 185 number is wrong. They also took issue with a letter D.H.S. sent them in early September, in which the agency reiterated its initial claims about nearly 16,000 noncitizens on the rolls and pressured state officials to review each case in a letter to Nevada officials in early September.
