I *hate* this "digital divide" framing for AI; even libraries marshal it to justify their "AI literacy classes," ensuring all have "access" for self-actualization and economic opportunity. Maybe instead some folks are sufficiently literate, and they're instead choosing *principled refusal*.

There is no more "state of the humanities" as such. There is no condition in which the humanities are under attack in which the whole university is not under attack. There is no condition in which the university is under attack that the whole of educational
infrastructure, public and private, from pre-K up, is not under attack. And there is no condition in which education is under attack
in which civil society can remain unimperiled. There is no sense calling for independent or solitary action by something called "the humanities" when that category has been so thoroughly absorbed by concerted attacks on democratic governance, due process of law, rights to privacy, security, assembly, and expression.
We are all humanists now.

I’m finally reading Thomas McGrath’s Letter to an Imaginary Friend and it includes this great note in the front matter. Besides the UND vs NDSU drama, I think “the University suffering from being too far above the battle” is exactly the critique for our time (about all universities)
Photo of text excerpt: I depended upon three sources for corrections: for Part One, a hand-written draft, the only extant manuscript according to McGrath himself; for Part Two, two typed drafts, both containing (sometimes contradictory) corrections by the poet. Martin McGrath, the poet's brother, Abigail Potvin Jensen, his secretary, and I, all expended a significant effort to secure these sources along with other papers at the University of North Dakota. However, despite appeals from all of us, the University, suffering as Tom might say from being too far above the battle, refused to suspend difficult bureaucratic policies to facilitate my efforts. I recommend that papers relating to Tom McGrath be donated to the McGrath collection at North Dakota State University in Fargo, where I have already agreed to contribute what I hold.
