I have never seen a carpet beater in real life. I don't think I have seen a photo of a carpet beater before. I have only seen a picture of a carpet beater when Dennis the Menace or Roger the Dodger's dad was about to wallop his kid with one.

This gets said constantly, but it worth reiterating: Games Workshop being bigger than fishing is important to shout about because you wouldn't know it from government talking points, which are rarely about anything creative or artistic. Growth won't involve fish or steel, it will involve goblins.

A man builds an IED. He sets it off in a busy public street. Shrapnel flies about hitting cars, homes and a child's bedroom. It's a miracle nobody is injured. And Reform MP Sarah Pochin calls his imprisonment "disproportionate" and "two tier justice."
It does raise this point of two-tiered
justice..

Reform's Sarah Pochin believes the
sentence handed to the 64-year-old who
blew up a ULEZ camera was
disproportionate'.

the story about the ULEZ bomber, a white bloke in his 60s, still isn’t on the front page of the BBC News when it feels like quite a big story about online radicalisation & violence

And, of course, catastrophic for local radio, losing audience, locality and quality, just as commercial radio consolidates to national brands.

13 Monsters Good And True I think there are so many genuine monsters in the world that I am consoling myself by drawing little monsters who are good.
Drawing of 13 little 'monsters', rather cute little critters who wouldn't harm a fly, in fact they'd probably give it a bowl of milk and a tiny bed for the night.

Liar. Small boat crossings peaked under Johnson in 2022 reaching 46,000 in 2022. In current year they are 18,565 and falling. Also prior to Boris Johnson's Brexit there were none.
It's a disaster, and it can all be traced to
Labour ideology. Burnham has no mandate
from the people. He has no real ideas, and
no plan,

Johnson on X

On the BBC News Katya Adler has just described Germany, where the far right AFD keep winning elections, as entering 'uncharted political territory'. Hmmm. Where Germany is concerned I think that territory is pretty well charted.

Misread this title and was briefly excited by the idea of a very British Planet Of The Apes, where the apes took over only the UK, and the other countries had to come to terms on how to manage relations with this insane country. Apes smashing up parliament and going on the Now Show, please make it.
Untitled Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes sequel (2027)
Asbell announced that a sequel to Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is in development. It is planned to be released on May 14, 2027.[132] In May 2026, it was reported a new film unrelated to the previous film will be directed by Matt Shakman and written by Josh Friedman.[133]

Because it plays out in the FT and the Today programme with all the political scrutiny that suggests, whereas "you now have to pay at [regional city] museum" goes by unoticed, except in regional city.

OK, and now do that calculation for the whole country. If you are counting "Didn't vote" then you'll find that nowhere voted for austerity - or Brexit!

Michael Cook @mikecookwrites.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Yes, Bristol's free museums are great but that's at the whim of the local authority. Nottingham Castle Museum used to be free but now there is a charge. The national museums won't charge without a national conversation.

Michael Cook @mikecookwrites.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
You are right - they are funded jointly by ACE, charity and local government funding. But Arts Council funding has historically been less stable than that which the national museums enjoy.

Michael Cook @mikecookwrites.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Sorry? You were pretending London hadn't voted for austerity. That is simply not true.

Google "first past the post". Most Londoners voted for the austerity parties.

Michael Cook @mikecookwrites.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Disproportionate to the public investment given to transport in every other UK region. London has been gifted the best public transport infrastructure historically, which contributes hugely to its commercial success, yet it receives ever more public investment to make the gap even larger.

Michael Cook @mikecookwrites.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Why are London museums more important than any other museums? You don't seem to give any thought to the civic value of having strong public institutions across the country.
110
Michael Cook @mikecookwrites.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
You are rewriting history. 57% of Londoners voted for the 2010 coalition parties (Cons and Lib Dem) that championed austerity.

Michael Cook @mikecookwrites.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Public investment in London remains disproportionately high. Look at transport investment per capita, for example. Nearly double the UK average, more like three times where I live.
Graph showing transport investment per capita across the UK in 2025 with London the highest at £1,195 per person and the East Midlands as the lowest at £376 per person.

Michael Cook @mikecookwrites.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
Yes, many regions don't fund themselves because so much of our nation's institutions, investment and commerce are centred on London. That's not a reason for London to hold onto more, it's a reason to redistribute public income more fairly.
