I know I've shared this illustration for #SundayFishSketch a few times now, but I'm sharing it again because it was accepted into the Minnesota State Fair fine arts building and is currently on display. So, if you're headed to the fair check it and the other amazing art out!
An illustration of a Burbot (a type of fish) swimming in deep water. The water is dark - almost black - and the bottom is a mixture of sand, silt, and rocks. The burbot is in three-quarter view, and the front is illuminated while the back fades into the background. A school of small, nondescript silver fish swim beneath the burbot.

We are seeking project proposals for funding from the Midwest Glacial Lakes Partnership 2027 Lake Conservation Grant. The MGLP is one of twenty partnerships that span the nation under the umbrella of the National Fish Habitat Partnership (NFHP). The MGLP area of focus is glacial lakes and their watersheds (see figure). Nine Midwestern states, numerous federal agencies, tribal governments, and private natural resource entities have been integral partners in the development and operation of the MGLP.

We often hear from folks who think they've caught a snakehead in Michigan. It's never a snakehead - it's nearly always a bowfin, or, occasionally, a burbot. Unfortunately, the fish often don't survive the encounter due to the misidentification. Check out this handy article to learn the differences!

Promotional graphic for the MiCorps AIS Detection Blitz. Text reads: Your Photos Can Help Track Michigan’s Aquatic Invaders!
Heading out on the water during the July 4th holiday week?
Keep your phone handy! From June 28 - July 6, the Michigan
Clean Water Corps (MiCorps), a statewide community science
network that tracks what's happening beneath the surface of
Michigan’s lakes and rivers, is hosting an Aquatic Invasive
Species (AIS) Detection Blitz.
Ever heard of a detection blitz? Think of it as a community-wide
treasure hunt, except you're spotting aquatic invasive species!
It's easy to help - if you see an unfamiliar aquatic plant, a
strange critter, or even something you have heard about (like
zebra mussels or Eurasian watermilfoil), snap a quick photo
using the free iNaturalist app.
Your photos turn everyday nature observations into valuable
scientific data, helping scientists and natural resource
managers quickly identify and track potential threats in our
waters.
How to Participate:
Download the free iNaturalist app and create an account.
Join the "MiCorps AIS Detection Blitz" project in the app.
Snap and upload your photos anytime during the event
dates- no special ID skills needed!
Let's see what we can discover together!

Have been working on an illustration of Chiasmodon niger and decided to modify it a bit to fit today's #SundayFishSketch theme.
An in progress illustration of a Black Swallower fish. This fish lives in the deep sea and is brown to black in color with a long, thin body. It has a pretty large eye and very large mouth that leads to a stomach that can extend to several times its regular size, sometimes even becoming partly transparent. This allows the fish to eat prey larger than itself. In this illustration, I added some colorful Easter eggs in its stomach to fit with the Sunday Fish Sketch theme.
