Can we trust? Yes, we can trust estimates of species turnover, but estimates of changes in species richness are less reliable. Our new article in the Journal of Ecology: doi.org/10.1111/1365... @journalofecology.bsky.social @iavs5.bsky.social

Když řekám nedovolíme divočit, přispíváme k větším povodním i ke ztrátě nenahraditelných živých druhů
Přirozená dynamika některých řek, zejména horských, udržuje krajinu živou a povodně v přiměřeném rozsahu. Člověk do spontánního divočení řek často zasahuje tak, že škody jsou větší než užitek.

Yesterday, I defended my PhD thesis at @univie.ac.at. Thanks @vvandvik.bsky.social and Bente Graae for reviewing it and Stefan Dullinger for supervising. I tasted quite a bit of science during my Master's by leading 5 papers and doing lots of field research. But this was different. Extraordinary.

It’s time for THE charger. Today, the USB-C becomes officially the common standard for charging new mobile electronic devices in the EU. It means better-charging technology, reduced e-waste, and less fuss to find the chargers you need! #DigitalEU
A minimalist illustration showing a packaged charger box labeled "one Union one Charger." The box features an image of a blue charger with the European Union flag symbol and a USB-C cable. The scene is set within a holiday theme, with decorative Christmas trees, ornaments, and gift boxes surrounding the charger box. In the top right corner, there is a small EU flag symbol.

2️⃣8️⃣ Noccaea rotundifolia, also known as Thlaspi, is an Alpine endemic growing on carbonate screes up to 3000 m. The Alpine scree vegetation class Thlaspietea rotundifolii is named after it. As a “snow runner,” its fruits are blown by the wind across the snow in winter, dispersing its seeds.

The communist experience was terrible. It left us (very) few good things, though. For instance, freedom to roam guaranteed by law. Will never forget how, at a workshop in Switzerland, along with my Estonian friend, we wanted to cross a meadow, and the Swiss shouted at us as if we'd killed somebody.

2️⃣6️⃣ Trifolium alpinum. Grows in mountains of southern and central Europe (Pyrenees, Alps, Apennines, Southern Carpathians) on silicate substrates, from montane to alpine zones, up to 3100 m. A perennial species intolerant to frequent mowing, it thrives in moderately dry mountain meadows and pastures.

2️⃣5️⃣ Bistorta vivipara. I'd say (one of) the most common arcto-alpine species distributed over the northern hemisphere. It's a generalist (but nice one) growing on various bedrocks and throughout elevations. Probably not too surprising that it's also a common target plant of various research projects.

This symbol of alpinism can be found in mount. of Central and S Europe, on alpine meadows, in rocky crevices, scree, up to 3000 m. Merry Xmas!

🧵⏬ Ever wondered what's happening below snow in high mountains? Well, it's not at all bad down there. This is average February soil T (coldest month). Note that apart from elevation, it's mostly controlled by curvature, thereby snow depth and related insulation. Whites are temperatures above 0°C.

This is a really fascinating debate. Shall we introduce a non-native species if the whole ecosystem would benefit from it? I think that when it comes to plants (and probably also insects), there is still agreement on a huge NO. With animals, this is much more nuanced and interesting discussion.
