Apropos of very little, it’s interesting to see the UK and Ireland momentary singing off a similar hymn book on current affairs…

Good if true. The story of C21 media is the epistemic crisis that has followed the hollowing out of PSB standard journalism, which itself comes on foot of political pressure from the private sector whose own business model has suffered a disastrous and catastrophic collapse…

1/ How do you build a resilient health system when local politicians are terrified of hard decisions on a complex policy while the local media is only interested in easy to cover, easy to sell culture war stories. That's what undergirds Northern Ireland's health crisis.

1/ There seems to be two rules in Northern Ireland about political violence, and once seen, it’s hard to unsee it. Honour dead IRA men with a colour party and full military honours and nobody blinks. Fly one loyalist paramilitary flag at a parade and it becomes a hate crime.

Every quarter @Gallup.com asks people if they’re a Democrat, Republican or Independent, and if Independent which way they lean. First two quarters if this year it was 49% Democrats+leaners vs 39% Republicans+leaners, a 10% margin. The last time either party had a margin larger than 6% was 2008.

Much talk in Reform circles today about an unfair 'Establishment' stitch-up of a 'newcomer party', but the C4 'sting' is actually remarkably similar to the C4/ Times expose of Labour's Steve 'cab for hire' Byers in 2010 (much to Farage/ UKIP's glee, IIRC): www.theguardian.com/politics/201...

1/ Robert Putnam spent 25 years documenting how Americans stopped joining things. His new data says it’s a cycle, not an ending — we built a shared “we” once, from an atomized Gilded Age, and could again. The question progressives keep dodging: how? 🧵

📈 Focusing on the 2025 #German federal election and using #GLES data, we find that loneliness is associated with electoral #disengagement: people who report higher levels of loneliness are more likely to abstain from voting. However, we find no evidence that loneliness increases support for the AfD.

Much as I'd love to see a United Ireland, and vague as the provisions of the Good Friday Agreement are, we're not within a beagle's gowl of it "seeming likely" that a majority in Northern Ireland would vote in favour. Peaceful bijurisdictionality in Ireland will have to do for now, and that's OK.

1/ No PM can delete the Good Friday Agreement's referendum provision: true. But Burnham said he won't call a poll. That's a political position, not a repeal of Schedule 1. Refusing to hold a border poll and abolishing the right to one are not the same thing, and this manufactured outrage blurs them.

1/3 Europe’s immigration debate is aimed at the wrong target. The real driver isn’t borders — it’s births. EU fertility fell to 1.34 in 2024, miles below the 2.1 replacement rate, and deaths have outnumbered births every year since 2012. Take away migration and the population just shrinks.

Last week's Fleadh Cheoil in Belfast was a landmark in normalising the city. Spontaneous traditional music, dancing in the streets, feeling the centre belonged to all. Cross-community participation. 1.6M visitors, many from the South who'd rarely go North. A win all round. And it'll be back in 2027.
