🚨 Workforces exposed to globalization and decarbonization are often overwhelmingly male. New article at @ajpseditor.bsky.social with @rickyclark.bsky.social and @rkhoban.bsky.social asks how layoffs of these men shape voting: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
AJPS article: "Breadwinner Backlash." Abstract: Low-skilled men have long been vulnerable to globalization, decarbonization, and other forms of economic disruption. When shocks are realized, women often increase their paid labor to compensate for men's loss of income. We study how layoffs of low-skilled men and concurrent shifts in workforce composition toward women affect voting. We theorize that this labor market rebalancing produces “nostalgic” coalitions of men and women that seek a return to male-breadwinner family models. Such attitudes fuel right-wing movements that pledge to protect conservative gender roles. Evidence from local labor markets and voting in the United States over the last two decades, as well as a longitudinal study tracking individual Americans over several decades, support this theory. These findings contribute a new gender-based account of the globalization backlash.

De la symbolisation positive de la précarité chez les artistes: le cas des musicien·nes "bohèmes" "It’s Better to See Yourself as a Bohemian Than Poor: Justifying precarious accommodation as bohemianism among independent musicians" by J. Vachet & N. Bencherki 👀 journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1...
It’s Better to See Yourself as a Bohemian Than Poor': Justifying precarious
accommodation as bohemianism among independent musicians
Jérémy Vachet1, Nicolas Bencherki2
1 Audencia Business School, France
2 Université TÉLUQ, Canada and Audencia Business School, France
Abstract
This article shows that independent musicians justify and endure precarious living and working
conditions by discursively mobilizing the discourse of bohemianism. Drawing on an analytic
ethnography combining long-term participant observation and 60 interviews conducted in the
United States, France, and Sweden, we explore how musicians reconcile poor housing, unstable
income, and spatial insecurity with the perceived necessity of remaining in major urban centres.
Our analysis reveals that bohemianism operates as a discursive resource that aestheticizes
precarity, enabling musicians to cope, all the while obfuscating their situation as exploited
workers. The bohemian myth thus has performative effects: it normalizes sacrifice, contributes to
consenting to exploitation, and unwittingly facilitates gentrification by attaching symbolic value
to artists' living spaces, thus contributing to reproducing the very precarity artists seek to
mitigate. Crucially, the capacity to inhabit bohemianism is unevenly distributed, reflecting
differences in social class background

Turns out Sweden and Norway are just as ineffective at taxing billionaires as the US, France, Brazil, etc because of the use of personal holding companies, which the super-rich use to protect dividends & cap gains from taxation New from Ring, @seimseim.bsky.social, and @gabrielzucman.bsky.social

JEL No. D31, H26
ABSTRACT
Tax avoidance through personal holding companies has long been viewed as a key challenge for progressive income taxation. We exploit twenty years of administrative micro-data linking firms to owners in Sweden and Norway to analyze how the use of personal holding companies varies across the income distribution and to quantify its implications in a quasi-experimental setting. About half of the income of the top 0.1% is retained in personal holding companies defined, as in US tax law, as firms for which five or fewer owners own more than 50% of the stock and that derive more than 60% of income from investment income. Event studies of shocks to operational firms' value-added show that holding companies shield around half of dividend distributions from individual income taxation. Profits tend to remain in holding companies for long periods of time, with cumulative payout rates of 15%-20% over two decades for the highest income groups. Wealth taxes do not provide an effective backstop due to the low valuation (or exemption) of shares in private businesses. As a result, effective tax rates, all taxes included, fall from about 50% for the upper middle class to about 15%-20% among the highest-net-worth individuals. Accounting for income in holding companies erases half of the difference in the 1980-2020 rise of the top 1% fiscal income share between Nordic countries and the United States, where rules penalizing the use of holding companies have been in place since the 1930s.

One of the most interesting things I’ve read in ages. Hunting for Hollanders: The community responsibility system, trade sanctions, and public debt in the late-medieval Low Countries. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
To persuade creditors to lend, cities in the Low Countries
relied on a community responsibility system that made
all citizens personally liable for public debt. This exposed
itinerant citizens to significant risks: their merchandise
could be confiscated by creditors, and they could even
be imprisoned for debt. Although it is usually difficult
to assess how such sanctions were enforced in practice,
this study examines a unique account of a group of
creditors actively pursuing repayment. Their principal
debt collector was a monk of the Carthusian order who
travelled tirelessly throughout the Lower Rhine region in
search of inhabitants of the county of Holland. This monk-
turned-bounty-hunter primarily targeted merchants and
their goods but also sought to seize financial instruments
and real estate owned by Hollanders. Whilst existing
literature emphasizes reputation-based mechanisms to
explain polities’ access to credit, this evidence suggests
that sanction-based mechanisms were equally important:
reprisals proved effective in recovering debts. Consider-
ing that the community responsibility system exposed
merchants to sanctions, its survival into the early modern
period is quite striking. I argue that the creation of public
debt secured political and economic privileges that cities
valued more highly than the safety of their merchant
