Killed. NSF’s SBE was killed, in violation of law. The President does not have the power to choose to kill programs at a whim by defunding them. The imperial presidency was a mistake and we are in a separation of powers constitutional crisis.

Biochemist Dr. Ida Stephens Owens mapped how human genes control drug metabolism. The first Black woman to earn a PhD from Duke (1967), she spent ~50 years at NIH. She identified the UGT1A gene complex, decoding how enzymes detoxify drugs & harmful toxins. She was born #OTD in 1939.🧵 #WomenInSTEM
A charming photograph of American biochemist Dr. Ida Stephens Owens (1939–2020), renowned for her groundbreaking research on drug-detoxifying enzymes and human genetics, posing in a laboratory setting. Standing from the waist up, she is turned slightly to the right, looking forward with a warm, confident smile that lights up her face. She has short, curly black hair and wears a delicate gold chain necklace with a small round pendant, and a ring on her finger. She is dressed in a casual, short-sleeved beige knit top. Her forearms rest on a surface in the foreground, with one hand loosely holding a pink folder or pamphlet. Behind her, a brightly illuminated laboratory reveals her research environment, featuring a tall shelf tightly packed with colorful textbooks, alongside structured racks holding assorted glass beakers and scientific equipment. The overall composition balances her approachable, dignified expression with the busy backdrop of her historic, decades-long career at the National Institutes of Health.

Past American dominance in science is not due to a few dozen “top scholars.” It’s due to America 🇺🇸 spending ENORMOUSLY more on science than other countries and distributing it widely. Canada 🇨🇦 boasting about attracting “top talent” of a few dozen people is not serious. And not US “brain drain.”

The real American 🇺🇸 “brain drain” isn’t that a few established scholars might get new jobs outside the US, it’s the enormous number of grad students - particularly international grad students - who can’t or won’t study in the US now or in years to come. That’s the body blow.

“Still, he noted, ‘you're raising a really, really important point, which is that when, as scientists, we find things that don't fit our hypotheses, we shouldn't just dismiss them. We should step back & say, “You know, could this actually be true?”'" 🧪🛟
In 2004, the English epidemiologist Michael Marmot wrote,
"Scientific findings do not fall on blank minds that get made up as a result. Science engages with busy minds that have strong views about how things are and ought to be." Marmot was writing about how politicians deal with scientific evidence—always concluding that the latest data supported their existing views— but he acknowledged that scientists weren't so different.
The ice-cream saga shows how this plays out in practice. Many stories can be told about any given scientific inquiry, and choosing one is a messy, value-laden process. A scientist may worry over how their story fits with common sense, and whether they have sufficient evidence to back it up. They may also worry that it poses a threat to public health, or to their credibility. If there's a lesson to be drawn from the parable of the diet world's most inconvenient truth, it's that scientific knowledge is itself a packaged good. The data, whatever they show, are just ingredients.
