My one unpopular (and probably outright stupid) belief about sports is that athletes should absolutely be allowed to fight fans, especially the ones rich enough to afford courtside seats.

I've said it before, but the "free speech absolutists" and "truth over political correctness" people are remarkably unconcerned about the truthfulness of their own speech. Tonight's case-in-point? This sentence in Steven Pinker's "When Everyone Knows That Everyone Knows":
Snippet from Pinker's book: And in defiance of their universities’ mission statements, many academics believe that the primary purpose of a university is not to discover and transmit knowledge but to pursue social justice, conceived as the wresting of power by victim groups from oppressor groups

National security decision-making has a longer time horizon. It would be stupid for Canada, Europe, South Korea, etc. to act now based on assuming the US will be a reliable in a decade. We have shown that we are not. Many Americans still don’t appreciate how profound of a change that is.

I didn't hold back. These centers are a blight on higher education and we should say so. dailyiowan.com/2026/09/15/u...
“Center for Intellectual Freedom is a really Orwellian name because they’re forcing mandatory classes on students who don’t want it,” Ray said. “Just as a matter of pure consistency, if closing African American Studies was just a financial decision, the center should be closed.” Ray said universities do a better job fostering free thought than any other institution — including churches, workplaces, and the military.

“You can say and do things at universities that you cannot do anywhere else,” he said. “So the notion that universities are a problem when it comes to free speech is just a lie.”

In a dashboard available to the workers, human reviewers are able to select which “task” they want to take on. Once they click that, they are presented with the real ChatGPT user’s prompt. 404 Media has seen multiple real prompts but is not quoting any of them for source protection reasons. Some of the prompts indicate the ChatGPT user does not expect that a human may end up reading their conversation, because they ask ChatGPT to keep the content to themselves.

The reason I'm cynical about people's motives for saccharine memorialization of 9/11 is that they use it as a cudgel. "I was affected in a way you weren't, and everything became clear: we were all united and all cared for each other -- except for the people who we othered, who were pure evil"

Since Stan's post reminded me of Jack Grieve's work, I plugged three temperature words into Jack's word visualizer: isogloss.shinyapps.io/isogloss/ I think it's interesting that "hot" and "cold" are sort of oppositely distributed, but not quite. And then the north-south split on "warm".
Map of the use of the word "hot" across the US. Most of the use is in the West, South Texas, and the Mississippi ValleyMap of the use of the word "cold" across the US. Most of the use is in the Northern Midwest, Texas, the Deep South, and West Virginia.Map of the use of the word "warm" across the US. These kinds of oaths, often euphemized, were popular centuries ago. Here's @misterslang.bsky.social, in "Language! 500 Years of the Vulgar Tongue":
"The [17th] century also indulged a variety of oaths, blasphemous or otherwise. Plays were awash with them and as examples these turn up regularly on stage. For instance, ads meant God's and came in such compounds as adsblood! adsbleed! adsbud! Adsbudikins! adsheart! ad’s (heart’s) wounds! (also ad’s heartlikins! ... heartliwounds! ... waudds! ... waunds! ... wauntlikins!), adslife! (also adslidikins! ads my life, adsnigs! adso! (God's oath!) and adsooks! adzooks! or ads wooks! Gad played a parallel role, giving gadsbobs! (also gadsbud!) gadsbodikins! (also gadsbudakins!) gadslid! gadsnigs! gadsnouns! (also gad-zoons! gadzounds!) gadso! gadsokers! (also gadsookers! gad-zookers!) gadsprecious! gadswogs! gadswoons! (also gad zoons!) and gadzooks! (also gadsooks! gadzookens! gadzookikins!). All these and many more invoked God's blood, body, heart, wounds, nails and the synonymous ‘hooks’ and so on. ‘God’ was generally Christ in this context, thus the references to the crucifixion. Only ‘nigs’ remains a mystery: the OED dismisses it as ‘not found in other contexts, and probably ... corrupt or fabricated’."

I think Hunter S. Thompson's column in the immediate aftermath pretty much nailed it www.espn.com/espn/page2/s...
The towers are gone now, reduced to bloody rubble, along with all hopes for Peace in Our Time, in the United States or any other country. Make no mistake about it: We are At War now -- with somebody -- and we will stay At War with that mysterious Enemy for the rest of our lives.

It will be a Religious War, a sort of Christian Jihad, fueled by religious hatred and led by merciless fanatics on both sides. It will be guerilla warfare on a global scale, with no front lines and no identifiable enemy. Osama bin Laden may be a primitive "figurehead" -- or even dead, for all we know -- but whoever put those All-American jet planes loaded with All-American fuel into the Twin Towers and the Pentagon did it with chilling precision and accuracy. The second one was a dead-on bullseye. Straight into the middle of the skyscraper. This is going to be a very expensive war, and Victory is not guaranteed -- for anyone, and certainly not for anyone as baffled as George W. Bush. All he knows is that his father started the war a long time ago, and that he, the goofy child-President, has been chosen by Fate and the global Oil industry to finish it Now. He will declare a National Security Emergency and clamp down Hard on Everybody, no matter where they live or why. If the guilty won't hold up their hands and confess, he and the Generals will ferret them out by force.

Good luck. He is in for a profoundly difficult job -- armed as he is with no credible Military Intelligence, no witnesses and only the ghost of Bin Laden to blame for the tragedy.
OK. It is 24 hours later now, and we are not getting much information about the Five Ws of this thing.

The numbers out of the Pentagon are baffling, as if Military Censorship has already been imposed on the media. It is ominous. The only news on TV comes from weeping victims and ignorant speculators.

The lid is on. Loose Lips Sink Ships. Don't say anything that might give aid to The Enemy.
