Fantastic turnout by campaigners in Liverpool, protesting the Merseyrail e-bike ban. Politicians seem unified... will we see a rethink? I hope so 🤞 Thanks to @cyclinguk.bsky.social for their help 😎

🚲 Do you take your e-bike on the Merseyrail network? #Merseyfail has banned non-folding e-bikes from its trains and stations. We asked Merseyrail to meet and share the evidence, they said no. We’re challenging the ban via our Cyclists’ Defence Fund. Help us bin the ban: cyclinguk.org/merseyfail

So much of our urban anxiety is just the background threat of cars. We're always guarding kids, pets, and ourselves from traffic. What if we designed that danger out of the built environment? Give the space back to people and let carefree life thrive, no matter the age or physical ability.

Brilliant to hear how local campaigners successfully stopped the building of a dual carriageway right down the middle of Rimrose Valley Country Park in Sefton. Now, thanks to @rimrosevalley.bsky.social it's teeming with wildlife and walking and cycle paths for everyone to enjoy. Have you visited?

It's good to see government action against dangerous pavement parking. However, it is deeply disappointing not to see a nationwide ban. Thanks to @wheelsforwellbeing.org.uk for this illustration of why this is such a frustrating and dangerous problem for people walking, wheeling and cycling.
a cartoon shows cars parked all over the road and pavements, with speech bubbles of car drivers shouting at people walking, wheeling and cycling to get out of their way.

We've all seen the before-and-after photos of Amsterdam and Paris - but we have our own examples to show how Liverpool is progressing away from gridlock and pollution, towards streets that are vibrant, welcoming and safe for everyone. More of this sort of thing please!

The two tests of cycling infrastructure should be 1 - would this be okay for a 12 year old child on their own? AND 2 - would this be okay for lone woman at night? If the answer to either of these is NO then it's not adequate.

Exacerbated by a social media environment that has turned the push for liveable cities into another culture war, we shouldn't conflate the digital and real worlds. Bikelash might be inevitable, but it's surmountable, if we realise this isn't just the right thing to do, it's the popular thing to do.🔚

The global phenomenon of “bikelash” has become one of the biggest barriers to implementing interventions that make our streets more liveable, accessible and sustainable. So how do we best manage it as advocates for change? Here are eight strategies we recently presented at the Velo-city Conference.🧵
