anyway. love libraries, love library workers, thank u for letting me be sappy. i have an obligation not to get caught up in the awe but sometimes you do in fact have to get a lil mushy. per usual, Dr. Hayden with the killer ending.
A lady came in, and as you know, in public libraries, there are a lot of people who are homeless, so they just need a place to be. She comes into the central library and goes up to the information desk.

She has very interesting attire, and this big bag. She asks to see the head of the library. I was the head of the library. The librarian — and this is what they do — tried to get more information from the person. They said, “Well, what would you like to see her for?” She opens the bag and she puts out on the table an injured bird.

And the librarian says, “Oh, what would you like her to do?” And the woman said, “Somebody’s got to care.”

Carla Hayden, Washington, D.C.

I have dozens – if not hundreds – of chance encounters with strangers every day in the city, and many of them are infused with kindness, humor, commiseration over tourists’ situational obliviousness :) Such a powerful, necessary antidote to the rancor online and the news’s perpetual despair.

when we mourn le guin, we mourn one of our greatest writers & thinkers. but we also mourn one of our all-time greatest haters
All you do is take all the sex out, and use little short words, and little dumb ideas, and don't be too scary, and be sure there's a happy ending. Right? Nothing to it. Write down. Right on.

If you do all that, you might even write Jonathan Livingston Seagull and make twenty billion dollars and have every adult in America reading your book.

But you won't have every kid in America reading your book. They will look at it, and they will see straight through it, with their clear, cold, beady little eyes, and they will put it down, and they will go away. Kids will devour vast amounts of garbage (and it is good for them) but they are not like adults: they have not yet learned to eat plastic.

Making space for communities to come together to read, to inspire them to share their own stories (perhaps in writing, perhaps not, let's not undervalue oral storytelling), is not only enough of a reason for libraries, but it is a vital public good! (2/3)
