"Benevolent" and "efficient" are doing a lot of work here, but even under the best conditions, odds are the next generation gets the benevolent dictator's idiot son, and things get murderously inefficient in a hurry.

You think, why could this possibly matter to them 50 years later, but it's stuff like this that hammers home the point: they believe in Impunity. They just fundamentally don't believe that powerful people should be held accountable for anything.

Depends on the definition of e-bike. I have a pedal assist bike and it's definitely exercise, the equivalent of a brisk walk several times a week. With the assist on low, it's maybe 30% faster with 30% less effort than a regular bike.

In which I explain one of the many WWII myths that I still see coming up even in 2026. That the intact Zero captured in the Aleutian Islands in July 1942 had a great deal of influence on the design and testing of the Grumman F6F-3 Hellcat. Turns out that wasn't really the case. My latest⬇️

Honestly feel like cars have a sort of Bilbo & the One Ring "after all, why not? why shouldn't I keep it?" quality. Someone I know rented one recently & while they had it they were like "I should get a car; I need a car" & as soon as they returned it they were like "I mean, literally why tho lmao"

Yeah, they're RRFBs. Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons, I think. They seem pretty effective on MLK where I live, but as Rob Prinz points out, it depends on the accompanying context.

The Houthi-aligned Bani Hashish tribes are massing in preparation to “liberate” the remaining Yemeni territory outside Houthi control. It’s a sea of Toyotas with mounted machine guns. I think this is what we should mean when we say Toyotathon from now on.

carbrain traffic "engineers" are why this pedestrian crosswalk (really car infrastructure, to help drivers avoid murdering people who have a right to cross) is flat with the road, to optimize vehicle flow and comfort, while pedestrians have to step down into a huge puddle that gets their feet wet
picture of a crosswalk. A huge dark truck just passed. It's raining heavily. There are huge puddles on both ends of the crosswalk at the curb cuts.

Asking sincerely, how is this horrible? I'd prefer cash grants or UBI, I'm not a fan of means testing, but this seems like one of the less draconian examples of it. 2+ years of grace period mitigates the problem of year-to-year income swing.

Dr. Gleick, you seem to be a pretty good sport about the pile-on. It seems to be a case of an expert weighing in on a topic outside his area of expertise. I hope you'll become more familiar with the urbanist/street safety literature that has been developed over the last several decades.

My neighbor says every car he's owned for the last 30 years has been hit while parked at one point or another. I'm pretty sure he'd oppose losing the parking, but I know he'd support cutting the lanes down to 1 in each direction.

I live on this stretch of MLK, and the islands do make it feel safer as a pedestrian. As a bicyclist and/or driver, it feels less safe since so many drivers don't really stick to the lane markings. I hope the city is collecting data on this stuff.

If you are a Mayor not getting coverage for good government work from old media, of course you reach out to influencers!
