I don’t think everyone realizes how bad things are for US science: For the fiscal year that just ended, the Trump regime withheld $1.4 billion from the National Science Foundation’s research budget, which is about 1/5 of its primary research budget.

Pathologist Dr. Elizabeth Stern's pioneering research in cytopathology transformed cervical cancer from a frequently fatal disease into a highly treatable and preventable disease. Her research revolutionized women’s healthcare. She was born #OTD in 1915. #WomenInSTEM
A black-and-white portrait of Canadian-American pathologist Dr. Elizabeth Stern (1915–1980), whose pioneering research in cytopathology transformed cervical cancer into a preventable disease. Dr. Stern is positioned slightly at an angle, facing forward with a calm, composed, and serious expression. Her dark hair is styled in a short, neat wave off her forehead, and her gaze is directed toward the camera. She wears a dark, simple collared blouse with subtle dotted textures. The composition focuses entirely on her upper shoulders and head against a stark, light-colored, uncluttered background that provides a high-contrast framing. The lighting is soft and even, highlighting her facial features. The overall mood is formal, dignified, and academic, capturing a historic visual record of an influential woman in STEM.

A beautiful portrait of Indian journalist, editor, and political activist Gauri Lankesh (1962–2017), an international symbol for press freedom who was assassinated outside her home. Lankesh is sitting at a polished wooden table. She is posed thoughtfully with her left elbow resting on the table, her hand gently supporting her chin, while her right hand rests flat on the surface, showcasing a simple ring on her finger. She wears a vibrant, olive-green cotton tunic featuring a decorative center panel patterned with intricate orange and brown traditional motifs. She wears a delicate gold chain necklace with a small pendant. Her expressive dark eyes look directly at the camera with a calm, resolute, and unwavering gaze, framed by her short, cropped silver-grey hair. The setting is softly lit with a warm, natural ambiance, against a blurred background of a multi-paned window. The overall mood of the composition is solemn yet dignified.

T-minus 12 hours until the launch of the Nancy Grace Roman telescope! 🥳 Roman, the "Mother of Hubble" & #NASA's first Chief of Astronomy was the foundational architect who transitioned the concept of a large space telescope from "hopeful speculation" to a funded reality. #WomenInSTEM #astronomy 🔭
A black-and-white portrait of Nancy Grace Roman (1925–2018), NASA's first Chief of Astronomy and the "Mother of Hubble." The photo shows her from the shoulders up, angled slightly to the right while she smiles warmly toward someone off-camera. She has short, styled white hair and wears distinctive dark-rimmed, oval glasses. Her attire features a light-colored, floral-patterned blouse with a large, elegant bow tied at the neck, and a simple stud earring is visible. In the background, a framed astronomical photograph of a dense star field or galaxy hangs on the wall, subtly nodding to her life's work. The composition is a classic medium close-up, capturing an expression of bright, intellectual engagement. The lighting is soft and professional, evoking a sense of mid-20th-century academic and scientific leadership. This image captures Roman at the height of her career, symbolizing her pivotal role in transitioning space-based astronomy from a theoretical dream to the reality of the Hubble Space Telescope.Credit: NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. An artist's concept illustration of NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope in space. The spacecraft features a large, cylindrical telescope tube with a prominent multi-layered silver sunshield extending from the front, a gold-colored instrument section on one side, extended solar panels, and a high-gain antenna dish. It is set against a vibrant cosmic background of swirling red and purple nebulae, scattered stars, and a bright distant light source.
