Acquisitions editors might tell you that the most best part of the job is getting a really awesome proposal, but don't believe them for a second. The best part is getting people to agree to serve as peer reviewers. Saints, angels, heroes all.

our book club meeting for TONI AT RANDOM is next week! great reasons to join us: - you've been meaning to read the book, and need a nudge - you've already read the book, and want to talk about it - you haven't read the book, and want to hear what other people think about it - it'll be a nice time!

I’ve been regularly volunteering at a food bank for about a year and please, if you want to help, consider donating cash. For $3, they can provide 15 meals and what they can do with the money you might spend on a few cans can be converted to vastly more in fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy, or meat.

AI-generated "books" are flooding Amazon and other online retailers. Here is a regular reminder: Take note of who published the books you read or buy. Presses are perhaps more important than ever in helping identify trustworthy resources in a failing information ecosystem.

Worth repeating: "University presses are essential infrastructure for the humanities & should be financially supported in the same way that other higher education inter-institutional infrastructure is." Some powerful examples here:

Institutions and funders must recognize the contributions of university presses to the humanities infrastructure (opinion)
Recognizing the university press community’s essential contributions to that infrastructure will be crucial as institutions and funders plan for the future, write Charles Watkinson and Melissa Pitts.

one thing about Kate's book WRITE THROUGH IT that I thought was really useful framing was the chapter on self-promotion where she talks about what kind of marketing the publisher is good at (trade reviews, bookstores & libraries) vs. what kind the author is good at (readers, your writing community)

100%. And authors- if there's critical feedback, it's much better to get that while the manuscript is still in development and the feedback can be addressed. Bumpy doesn't necessarily mean bad; rather, it often shows engaged reviewers who see enough potential in the work to raise important points.
